Susan's Story

Since I was only in Victoria about 4 years before moving on, I still keep in contact with my friends from High & Grade school in Metairie. A couple of us have gotten together over the past few years. Left Victoria (junior college) and went to Sam Houston state in Huntsville. After graduating from Sam Houston State University in 1978, I married Russell Kennedy(STJ'73). He finished at SFA in 80 and took a job (before graduation) at a Greenhouse operation. He's still there! We bought some land in Jacksonville, TX we designed and built our house (phase 1). Then Eric came along 9 years later and the house was put on hold for scouts, baseball and soccer. I survived Melanoma when Eric was 18 months. We finished the house (phase 2)4 years before Eric graduated high school in Bullard at Brook Hill.'05. I worked for Bealls General Office for 6 years as a Sales Audit supervisor and Asst. Sec. to the Comptroller; then at Bealls Distribution Center 4 years as Operations secretary and then Expeditor/ Liason for the DC, Buyers and Vendors. While dealing with a layoff, worked as a Legal Secretary for a Law Firm; then went back to the DC. Left in the fall of 93 and completed my first teaching job; didn't teach again until '98. Worked as an Early Childhood Area Manager for Head start for 4 years then began teaching at the DisciplineAlternativeEducationProg in Jacksonville: 4 core subjects for 3-8th grade and high school electives-housing, art, apparel, and nutrition. After 6 years there, taught 7&8th grade science and high school Chemistry at a 1A district. You know it's time to move on when the grandpa on the school board threatens your job because his grandson doesn't turn in his work and still wants an A. We all want something....right??? So............ that was the year that Russell was diagnosed with Prostate cancer and survived ('03) and then in '04, mom died. I took the next year off and worked my Mary Kay business full t...Expand for more
ime. It's great to have that income now as well as then. This my 16th year in Mary Kay. I worked as a Teacher in an itty-bitty school district for the Head Start program, parents are worse than grandparents there! On to better things, found a job posting in Tyler for a Family and Consumer Science teacher (Home Ec). Decided that the degree I had earned should get a chance. Took the job and have been in Tyler school district 5 years, teaching child Development, Fashion, Interior Design and Nutrition. Next year, I will have Fashion Design and Child Dev. I have just recently created an agreement with the Art Institute in Dallas so that my Fashion course will Articulate (like an AP course) with their courses. I saved the program that was going to be cut. So, I'm very excited about that. Sister Mary Ellen would faint! Dad died in '13, so it's been weird not having parents to talk to. I wish he could have known that I finally got a job in Jacksonville. After 10 years in Tyler, driving 26 miles for an hour both ways through 17 traffic lights one way, I finally got a teaching job in Jacksonville at the high school. I'm teaching Hospitality & Tourism-Principles and Intro to Culinary(next year, this year it's called Restaurant Managment). Love the drive-10 minutes, and the people I work with are great too! Eric joined scouts at 7 yrs. old and got his Eagle at 15; played baseball and soccer for school; graduated and went to TJC and SFA for 2 years then joined the marines; got married to Jayna Lyn 8 years ago, and now they have three most beautiful, perfect grandaughters ever-Ansley, Emma, and Astrid Jane, living in Alabama. Hopefully they will move home soon. When ever I can, I do ceramics, painting and mosiacs or sew baby girl clothes! We work around here, building and expanding. Everything I have done in the past has in some way affected my now and my now will affect my future. I wouldn't have it any other way!
