Susan's Story
After graduating from UNC-CH in 1974, I became an art teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. I still teach all levels of art at David W. Butler High School in Matthews, NC. I think I may have taught some of your children in the past 35 years.
Married Brek Cunningham in 1977. We separated in 1991, but have remained friends.
I have two wonderful sons, Charlie, 24, and Casey, 23. Both are honor graduate students. Charlie is a teaching fellow at NCState where he will graduate with a Masters of Civil Engineering/Structures in December. Casey is at UNC-CH in the Masters of Accounting program. Both are attending the colleges where they did their undergraduate work. They also have wonderful longtime girlfriends, so who knows....there may be daughters-in-law in the near future.
The boys and I still continue to get away as a family. We often go to Edisto Island, SC., where we spend a really relaxing week in pure beach isolation.(It's not very developed, in fact the town held a parade the day the Subway opened in the back of the BP station...Expand for more
. They also filmed all the Vietnam scenes from "Forrest Gump" there, if that tells you anything.) Swimming, fishing, crabbing, kayaking in the ACE Basin, are just a few of the things we like to do, in addition to going in to Charleston for an evening or two. One of the best parts is watching the sun come up over St. Helena Sound while the dolphins feed in the channel only a few yards from the deck of our condo, its so quiet that you can hear them clear their blow holes as they surface. Great stuff.
In addition, I was able to travel to NYC this past June with an Advanced Placement student who won a national silver Scholastics Medal (Scholastics Art and Writing) for her portfolio work done in my class. It was quite a treat to be recognized at Carnegie Hall as her teacher during the awards ceremony. CMS has a fantastic arts curriculum thanks to a lot of dedicated professionals; I'm very fortunate to be a part of it.
I don't get on the web site often, but it is fun to hear from you all and to see the many unique paths our lives have taken.
