Susan's Story
Life
I have added many experiences to my life since I graduated in 1966. I joined the navy for 3 years where I was trained to be a flight instructor and do maintenance on flight trainers. I then started my family. I married a wonderful man named Bob Ellis. He and I have 6 children. Our only daughter, Sandy was born in 1969. We then followed with 5 boys: Nick, Tony, Jerry, Ed and Tim. I really enjoyed being a mother and watching the kids grow up and go through all the stages that kids go through. I have had several jobs, some part time and some full time. I delivered newspapers 7 days a week with the older 4 kids helping. This gave them the money they needed for school activities. I also worked soldering circuit boards, stocking greeting cards, was a courier driver for a bank and cleaned parking lots. I got my job cleaning parking lots after I completed truck driving school and got my CDL (commercial drivers license). The parking lot job allowed...Expand for more
me to stay home with my kids. My youngest were in 3rd and 4th grade and my older ones were in high school. I did that job for 16 years. The income allowed me to become involved in shar pei dog rescue. When my boss sold his business, I started doing more volunteer work. I foster homed a dog for Summit Assistance Dogs and did the training needed for the dog to prepare it to be trained to assist disabled people. I now help the organization any way I am able and help some of the people who have received assistance dogs by helping with transportation, etc. I am even more interested in helping people after I had my anerisum surgery and regained my sight. When you are blind for over 2 months, you learn to see with more than your eyes. I have not received a college degree but my daughter has received her masters. My boys have also become productive members in the workforce. I may have been just a house wife. But I am very happy with the life I have had.
