Susan's Story
Life
After graduating, I went to Monmouth College for one year where I met Joe Hamburger from Farmingdale. We got married on Valentine's Day 1968. We went back to school at Rutgers in 1970. I got my B.A. in English in 1975 and Masters in Library Science in 1976. I got my first librarian job in Connecticut and then escaped the nasty winters five years later to Tallahassee, Florida for 7-1/2 years. While in Tally I got my M.A. in historical administration in 1985. We left for Richmond, Virginia in 1988 for another succession of jobs (this time as an archivist) for five years. In January 1994 I accepted a faculty librarian position at The Pennsylvania State University and moved back north. I finished writing my dissertation on the development of the horse racing...Expand for more
industry and got my Ph.D. in Dec. 1994. I got tenure at Penn State effective July 1, 2000. To celebrate, we bought our first house! In addition to all the library/archives jobs I've had, Joe and I also worked in the music business for ASCAP and BMI as field investigators, and we bought and resold vintage clothes to stores in VA, PA, and NJ. We still played our guitars and recorded songs by Bruce Springsteen on two limited edition fan-produced CDs. Joe died of bladder cancer in December 2007 but I'm hanging in there, as strong and determined as ever. In October 2009, Neil Stover contacted me through Classmates.com, we reconnected after 42 years, and fell in love. He moved in with me in December 2009, and we are blissfully happy. And, rock and roll is still my life!
