Susan's Story

So, I went to OSU, got married & moved to FLA in 1977. Got divorced (and annulled), came back to Cols briefly to finish my degree (BS in Mathematics, 1981). Went back to FLA & started working at a small computer software company. We did real-time systems. By 1985, our operating system had a 3% share of the US real-time market! For explanation: you know how there are computers inside everything now? Somebody has to write that software, and that was us. We were in satellite data networks, industrial printing presses, lots of manufacturing machine tools, a particle accelerator, telephone networks -- if you went to the grocery store in Ohio during the '90s, you probably used my software. I also designed & gave a one-week user training class for our software (mostly in the US, but also in Chile!). Chile was fantastic! I got to be there in 1989 for their first election (since the coup in 1973). None of the people I knew there had ever voted. They had a practice election at work, and (since I was from the US) I got to be the "international observer" for their pretend election, hehehe. In 1990, I left the company & went to Chile for 6 months, staying with friends & touring around. Yes, I learned...Expand for more
Spanish, but a surprising number of people knew English and wanted to practice that, so I didn't get to speak Spanish much, but it was handy when watching the news. I spent the 1st Gulf War there, and watched it from the outside... Everyone should go somewhere _else_ for a while. It's very informative. After I got back, I spent the next 10 years as a software contractor, again doing real-time device drivers & low-level systems internals. A couple of the jobs were telecommuting, which is great. Then, in 1998, a friend of mine was planning a cross-country road trip. She was considering what type of cel phone to buy, for safety reasons. I suggested that she just let me go with her -- _and_ my dog! So we all spent 2 months touring around out west. And I fell in love with Tucson, so the next time I was looking for a job, I specified that I'd take anything in Tucson. And that's how I came to work at Raytheon. I started in 2001. Here I'm working on real-time flight simulations. It's OK, but almost 10 years now, and I'm getting itchy for a change... I have a house out in the desert (five miles to pavement!), and I never want to move again. My commute is 30 miles, but I love my 7 acres of desert...
