Susan's Story

Life After graduating Central, I attended Marymount College where I was a French major. Before transferring to KU for a semester & then on to France to study, I married Norman Burt ('71 South). Surprise! I got pregnant a month later! No French university for me! But, at least he got a French name! Spencer Nelson was our first, Emily Catherine was born 21 months later, and three years after that, Marieke Beth arrived. I was fortunate enough to be a SAHM, discovering that being a mom was my true calling. The motherhood lasted, the marriage did not. I was a single mom for eight glorious years - the best time of my life. Those years were chaotic - all three children were in the gifted program and had a zillion activities while I attended college . I was dignosed with lupus and had to quit school a year before I was to receive my degree to teach junior high English. I remarried in 1988; my children all graduated Central. Spencer graduated from Bethany and eventually went to Harvard Law School - where he discovered it "wasn't his thing" after a year and a half. Emily and Marieke ended up at KU, and will both marry their sweeties soon. (Spencer is "m...Expand for more
arried" to his computer) I have been blessed with three beautiful (inside and outside) children who are extremely kind, compassionate, intelligent, witty - truly the most fun people I know! They are a joy to all who meet them. My walk with the Lord has sustained me through heartache and health problems, and I joyfully attend St. John's Missionary Baptist Church. I hope that Jesus shines through me in all that I do! UPDATE: I am the extremely proud Grammie GiGi of a 3 year old - Andrew- and he is expecting a baby sister in 2 months. The new sister has been christened "Jinglebell" by big brother, who has to be the most precocious and entertaining child I've ever experienced! (and mine were a trip!) The babies belong to my baby - Marieke - and her husband who live in Lawrence. My older daughter Emily lives with her husband and two poochies in suburb of Omaha. My son Spencer is living with his girlfriend in Baton Rouge (which I love!) Sadly, Spencer was told before Christmas that he has a 50/50 chance he has Lou Gehrig's. I am totally believing in a miracle that he will be healed. I hope all of you are enjoying joy and peace and love in your lives! Susan
