Susan's Story
The greatest adventure of my life so far was living in Europe for three years. When I met my husband, at 21, we decided we wanted to make that happen. It took 20 years. And it wasn't exactly as we'd planned either; drinking coffee at the Deux Maggots in Paris turned into visiting playgrounds all across Europe. Not every minute was fun, but it was all fascinating.
The worst day of my life was during chemo last fall. I had a bilateral mastectomy in November, started chemo three weeks after that and lay like a slug on the sofa during present opening on Christmas morning. My daughters and husband cooked an excellent meal for Christmas dinner, which they enjoyed mightily while I nibb...Expand for more
led delicately on turkey and the best mashed potatoes in the world.
Through the whole experience of breast cancer I had great support from all my family and friends and co-workers. On a whim, I started a blog on Caring Bridge to keep everyone updated on my progress. Writing about my experiences, trying to reframe them in a funny or positive way, made my days much easier to bear.
I'm now back at work at a local elementary school. My oldest daughter attends the UA. Her younger sister is a junior in high school. My husband, Michael, has worked for Intel for more than 20 years.
I miss the beauty of the Bay Area very much. Especially when it's freakin' hot down here in Phoenix.
