Susan's Story
Life
Hi all- Well since moving to Ohio my senior year :( I graduated high school and went tot he Univ. Of Dayton (a Private Catholic school, and no I'm not Catholic now!) and graduated with a minor in Psychology and a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice. I received a full scholarship for my Master's degree at the University of Cincinnati. I graduated from there in a year with a full thesis. I have been employed as a Parole Officer for the State of Ohio since graduating. I have been married twice, and do not have any kids. I am an AKC breeder of Chow-Chows and currently own 6 adults, 4 3 month old puppies, and a 3 week old puppy. I own a house that is in a historical district in Dayton, OH. It was built in 1890. I have spent the last 7 years remodeling and redecorating it. I really enjoyed seeing everyone at the 10th reunion. I know I didn't graduate from CA but I wish I did! I didn't know anyone up here. I graduated with 1,100 people!!! I'd love to hear from you!

School
My biggest crush would have to have been on Buddy Beach. 7th grade I had a huge crush on Paul Heard. I can't remember any teacher inspiring me...but I do remember 7th grade study hall w/ Mr. Channel! I had to stay after schhol for 2 months straight for detention!! And I had no way to get home from school, so Mr. Channel drove me home everyday!! I can remember the temperature being 100 degrees and he would smoke filterless Lucky Strikes and WOULDN'T ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN! uugghhh I remember driving to Jackson to attend a ton of concerts, riding around on the weekends, The Party Hut, A Christmas joyide in Glen Lingle's BLUE VAN!, running track, playing basketball, prom w/ Clint Lack and Bear Jones, and wearing as much make-up as I could possibly cake on my face!
College
I attended The University Of Dayton, in Ohio. It is a private Catholic University. I will never forget religion class on Catholicism! I had never even heard of half of the beliefs. Needless to say I had to question most of them and the poor priest probably had to sober up and read the "good book" again to refresh his memory! I still don't get the religion. I do know they believe in drinking!! And you can wear sweats to Mass (Church) unlike down South where you wear your Sunday's best. My first semester I partied myself almost out of college! My GPA was a whopping 1.9! I failed my Psychology final....I took my notes to the bar for "Drink and Drowned". I got the first question right, after that I made a pattern on the scantron sheet! I was the first person finished and went straight to my room to CRASH!! My roommate was a complete drunk! She was hysterical! We roomed together all 4 years and were both Criminal Justice majors. We had a HUGE graduation party at our house off campus. We had a live band on the front porch, 5 kegs of beer, a case of champaigne, and a variety of hard liquor. There were about 200 people at the...Expand for more
party. My dad video taped the whole weekends' events. Glad he did cause I don't remember all of it! I made a copy for all of my housemates for a graduation present. It is hysterical to watch. I managed to graduate with honors. Guess Criminal Justice just came pretty easy for me. I co-authored a paper on date rape that I presented at the annual Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences convention in 1991. The paper is published in the national journal as well. I was 1 of 3 undergraduate students approved to present a paper. It was a huge achievement and honor. I presented my findings along side some very well known tenured professors/authors. I was accepted to Sam Houston State University in Texas and the University of Cincinnati, in Ohio. I opted to go to Cincinnati and received a full scholarship for my Masters Degree which I completed in one year (1992) and defended a full thesis to boot. I wouldn't do that again!! Man was that stressful and a TON of reading/writing.I graduated with a 4.0!! I am very proud of that accomplishment. I commuted from Dayton to Cincinnati every day..about a 2 hour drive one way. I had 5 classes, one each day, which lasted 4 hours! I got out of class at 9:00 p.m. , arrived home at 11:00 p.m., and still had several hours of studying to do for the next day. Thank goodness for Mountain Dew!
Workplace
After I completed my Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, I began my employment with The State of Ohio, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, in 1994, as a Parole Officer I. I have reached Parole Officer III status and supervise around 150 adult offenders that have been released from prison. In my capacity as a P.O., I have obtained numerous certifications from the State. I am certified in un-armed self-defense, firearms, sex offender counseling, drug/alcohol counseling, instructional skills training, courtroom testifying, violation sanction hearings, and L.E.A.D.S. computer training.
I am certified as a C.P.R. trainer and first-aid trainer for the State. This entails my instructing classes on CPR/first-aid in the prison in Ohio, to both the corrections officers and inmates. I also teach other Parole Officers and office staff in other regions of Ohio.
I work very closely with the judges in the county which I supervise, as well as police officers, prosecutors, victim's advocates, drug/alcohol counselors, jails, prisons, and the Parole Board.
I love the job I do. It can be extremely unsatisfying and demanding, but it can also be very rewarding ...at times!
I placed 1rst in the women and in the top 1/3 overall, in a firearms competition held in 1995. I had a ball during the competition and met a lot of interesting people. There is a picture of me shooting my "piece" that I posted. It was on the cover of a quaterly memo sent out to State employees. It is posted in the second photo albulm. I look like I am shooting a barrel!
