Susan's Story

Life Attended Sam Levy (2nd grade) and Torrance Elemantary (3rd -6th grades) schools in Torrance CA. Family moved to Tempe, AZ in 1975. I went to Powell Jr High and Mesa High. Followed up at ASU where I received a Master of Architecture degree in 1987. I moved to California working for a home builder designing homes. I married Bill Rendahl (MHS class '82) in 1990 and together we have a beautiful daughter now25 years old, a Red Mountain HS, NAU and Belmont University (Nashville) graduate.. We moved back to Mesa in 1996 and enjoy running our own businesses. I also teach architecture classes at Mesa Community College. College I remember riding my bicycle the six miles to ASU most days as gas was expensive in 1981 - $1.25 per gallon!! Dodging traffic was not fun but at least I didn't have the hassle of finding parking or walking from lot 59. (This was before ASU built all the parking garages) The most fun during my college days was a semester of study in London, England. It was an independent study program with the Univ of Nebraska-Lincoln. We lived in a "flat" in an apartment building called Portsea Hall. The place was located above and behind a middle-eastern mens club which had belly dancing all night. The music poured into our paper thin walls - all night, every night! After our studies were complete my ASU group traveled for another 4 weeks in Europe. We rode night trains, showered at the train stations and saw all the architectural sites. The year was 1986. same year that the US bombed Libya, many Europeans protested US establishments and Chernobyl melted down. My traveling friends and I found out about the Libyan bombing as were changing trains from France to Spain, watching a TV showing red, white and blue planes dropping bombs. We couldn't understand the spoken words but the graphics were loud and clear. I remember being concerned about what to do, but since everything for traveling was prepaid we just decided to keep going. My favorite country was Spain, probably because it was so warm. The Las Ramblas was in full color. While in Barcelona the first of many bombings of McDonalds restaurants happened. I had just been to one that was bombed minutes after we left! Another great memory was waking up in Florence, Italy to the view of the old city, being served breakfast in bed by the grandmother of the family run pensione. By the time my traveling friends and I got back to London, Chernobyl had its event. The news was filled with stories about radioactive dust being carried over Europe and coming to England. Our plane back to the US was in two days, we waited and enjoyed the nice weather (finally) in London. Graduating ASU in 1987 with a Master of Architecture was a proud moment. I started my job search in Los Angeles and found a great job in the Inland Empire of California, where I worked for nearly 9 years before moving back to AZ. I still design houses for home builder clients and also design for remodeling clients.
