Susan's Story

I don'tknow where to begin so I'll just jump in. Got married in 1971 but it only lasted 2 years. Was working for my Dad's automotive parts warehouse in Hackensack, where I met my 2nd husband Bill. We married in '75 (I think) and moved to Colorado Springs after visiting Dolly and her husband. Bill and I bought a house there with a view of Pikes Peak right out my Living room Window. I went into College there, basically to expand on what I was already doing - Office Management. Bill and my marriage didn't last either. While attending college, I met my "soulmate". We were together 9 years, had my daughter, Briana with him (I wasn't supposed to be able to have any). In '85, I started body building. I loved it and it was a real deterent to the "I'm getting old" syndrum. When Briana reached 5 yr.old, I thought her father and I should take the relationship further. When he didn't "get off the pot", I chose to move closer to my parents, who were in Georgia, on the S.C. border. That was 1988. I ended up living in SC, bought my own home and continued working out. I was working for Ryobi America at the time when my body buiding started going backwards. Instead of building, my weight limits were going down and I felt like I'd overtaxed every muscle in my body. It took 2 years of various tests to finally diagnose me with fibromyalgia, with possible Lupus. Things have been downhill since then. I continued to work, but had little energy for m...Expand for more
uch of anything else. Different medications made the pain more bearable and I slept better, but it caused me to gain weight. Doubled with no longer working out, it was a double whammy. Fibromyalgia has since been recognized by Social Security so I finally applied for disability in 2005. Oh, I ended up moving in with my parents because I was down to only working part time and that was pushing it. Briana is still living in S.C. and is continuing her education as well as working full time. Unfortunately, my Dad fell on Oct. 21st and broke his hip. They did not realize he had a cerebral hemotoma until the next morning when they couldn't wake him up. That day was his 85th birthday. He passed on 36 hours later. I'm happy I had him around all that time. My Mom is now 81 and has her own health problems, so we work together to take care of the house. I won my disability 5/09, I've bought a small doublewide mobil home, and my daughter has moved back in with me. She made me a grandmother in Sept.'09. My three saving graces - one, having my daughter (who's now 29),my 13 mo. old granddaughter, and three, I'm establishing myself here as a gourd artist. I've taught myself how to do decorative painting, which I did for about 5 years 'till I discovered gourds. They are so versital; I can paint them, wood burn them, & carve them, plus there's a wide variety of embellishments to use. That has helped me keep my sanity. So, life goes on...
