Susan's Story

Life Bought my dream home in Paola with Shaun Matherly. I am so happy to be in Paola, not so many potholes in the roads. Daniel has now moved to Gulfport Mississippi to live with his paternal aunt and uncle who do not have any kids of their own so they are enjoying him. Having lived in the south growing up and then again in the Air force I am sure he will love the sun and sand. I am glad to see him out of Osawatomie but of course miss him even though we talk every day. Have a great guy in my life who makes me laugh and smile everyday. I left Osawatomie State Hospital and now work at Shawnee Mission Medical center, loving the new job. I do miss my patients as some of them I have worked with since the late 80's. I am just to old to have to wrestle anymore, although I am much tougher than I look. I am sure that is a Major shock as timid as I used to be. School One of the greatest things about my new job as an RN is that I get to see my Best friend from High School. Rhonda Holmes works on the same unit that I do, but she works days and I work evenings. That is probably a good thing for the unit the two of us together could be trouble. Oh, and that is we WORK at the state hospital, we are not the patients. Ha, ha!!!!! College Well what can I say, study study study and more study. I do remember being scared to death to start clinicals, except the Psych clinicals. I loved OB and Surgery, but not as much as Psych. I am so glad I am done driving, and studying. First semester was the best, because we were able to have our pot luck lunches together. After they stopped that it was Dollar menu at McDonalds. Robin and I went to take the NCLEX together. Robin...Expand for more
resisted the urge to have books in her hand until the minute before the test. Of course you know me, I just talk before a test and figure if I don't know it now it's to late to learn. But we both passed, I figured we would. Back in College online now to get my BSN, was going to get my MSN but decided I better do this in steps so I don't shock myself by looking at the cost. Workplace Well I graduated Nursing school in Dec. 2007 and am now an RN. So I went back to work at the place that I had so much fun working at in the past and loved. I went back to the state hospital, I had gone to work their in 1987 in Dietary, used some of that Air force experiance, and then went into nursing with encouragement from friends like Mike Woods. I worked as a Mental Health Aide for 8 years, and only left because I got stuck on nights. Left the State Hospital because it was becoming to overcrowded and violent. I now work at Shawnee Mission Medical center and love it, I was promoted to charge nurse this year. Military I started Basic training, and for some reason they thought that the smallest one there needed to be a squad leader. I had fun in basic, and remember getting to go to the concert "Sylvia" a country singer that did not last long. Then it was off to Lowery for Tech. school. Tech school was not so fun, but Lowery was great, and my classmates were great. Tons of fun their at the Airmans club, and when we went camping to the mountains. Then I went to Tyndall, and was loving it and having a blast until I met my now ex-husband. Why I picked the worst person on the base I have no idea, young and dumb. But I did get my wonderful son out of it, so that is good.
