Susan's Story

Life After high school, I went to West Virginia Career College in Fairmont. I met lots of friends there and we enjoyed visiting the Cabaret quite often. That is where I learned to overcome my shyness after a few drinks. The friends I made at the Career College are still my friends today and if I got nothing else out of that 9 month course but that, it was worth it. After College I worked at the School of Pharmacy as a secretary at WVU Med. Center. I worked there for about 4 years, then left due to wanting something else in my life. I knew secretarial work was boring and I felt as if I did everyone's dirty work. Also, it paid terribly. I couldn't afford to even support myself to the custom in which I wanted to live. I went home too because I missed my family. At any rate, I went to work at Scot Lad Foods as a secretary for about 3 years. I had been contemplating going back to college, real college, for about a year. Well, Scot Lad Foods closed down and they layed off all the employees. It was my perfect opportunity to go to college. My Family had just recently moved to Fairmont, therefore, I went to Fairmont State and chose teaching as a profession. Of course, I was a student 7 years older than the other students, but no one even noticed. While I was in college, I me...Expand for more
t my husband. As soon as I got a teaching job, he asked me to marry him. Guess he wanted a working woman. My mother died in 1988 also. I had my first child in 1991 about 17 years later than a lot of people that I went to high school with. I had my second child in 1994. I seemed to have done a lot of things in my life late. I have always been a late bloomer, I just hope that I am a late bloomer to die also since I had my children so late in life. I recently decided to go to Marshall for my reading masters. This is hard work with a job and two children, but so far I have managed it pretty well and haven't had a nervous breakdown yet. This May we moved into a newly built house that my husband, Mike, designed. He did an excellent job! He does everything well, that is why I married him. He is an inspiration to me to do better. I also attend church almost every Sunday and try to be a good christian. You noticed I said try. I am not perfect and Lord knows I never will be, but I keep trying. My life has had its ups and downs, but there has been something good that has come out of all the bad. And well the good was already good. I am probably happier now than I ever have been and I owe it all to God. I have a good husband, good children (most of the time) and a good life.
