Susan's Story

Amazing how life takes turns you never expect. After High School I went to Miami University for a little while, but could not find my calling. I traveled out West spending time on a farm that said it was comune - really it seemed a great way for the owner to get free help and give an interesting experience to us dewey eyed city dwelers looking for a new experience. I also traveled to Europe - in part with my grandmother. We visited the grave of the Uncle I never knew who died in World War II. Eventually, I decided to study nutrition at Ohio State and got my degree. After working several years at Riverside Methodist Hospital, I decided to make a change. I went to Clemson, SC to get a master's degree that would allow me to become a Registered Dietitian in 1983 - missing the first reunion to go off to school. I got my degree and met and eventually married the father of my children. I am the proud mother of 3 awesome kids - something I have always loved. To say I wanted them, would be an understatement. After 10 years of what turned out to be a disaster rather than a marriage, my ex and I divorced in 95. We continued to raise our children sorta separately but together. He lives about 8 miles from me and the kids spend time in both homes. As a dietitian I got to do some amazing things - I worked for the state both in the WIC program, in homes, and eventually in community development. Those funds dried up and the move I made to Ninety Six, from Pendleton eventually moved me from working for the state to working for hospitals. I have now managed the Food Services departments and provided clinical services to two small hospitals in the area for over...Expand for more
10 years. As a mother, I could not be prouder. My eldest just graduated from Clemson with a business degree he decided to put to work in a Management Intership program at Cintas in Charleston, SC. It is great to have a fun place to visit while I check up on his activities. My second child also graduated last year from Ninety Six High School as the valedictorian. She is now a freshman at Clemson and she seems to love it. I do hear from her, but I am definitely feeling the empty nest thing. My last child is now a sophmore at Ninety Six. At 15 he is already 6'3" and the football coach seems to be grooming him for a varsity lineman position next year. He plays mostly in the Junior Vasity games. I never imagined I would be the proud mother a football player. All three of my children played soccer. The oldest was a pretty renoun soccer goalie in his High School days. My daughter got many of her friends to try soccer and was the female athelete of the year before she graduated. Harrison is still playing that as well as the football he seems to love. I do go on, don't I? These are the highlights of my life. You would have to know me better to get the juicy details, but it does give you a picture, doesn't it? I am proud of the children I have raised and the work I have contributed to this world. I was very disappointed in my marriage choice, but at least I had the strength, wisdom and courage to live a happier life outside of the bad marriage I originally thought I needed to stay in. You know, life is good in your 50s. You do not worry so about what others think and you just do what you know will work for you. I do hope you can say the same.
