Susan's Story
Dear classmates,
Sorry to miss catching up in person at our 50th high school reunion. Since I left Seattle in 1979 to marry my husband, Dennis, we have lived in Closter, NJ, St. Petersburg, FL, and happily ever after in Santa Barbara, CA.
If I was at the reunion I'd bore you with pictures of my six adorable grandchildren: Ethan (12) Jackson (9), Sydney (4), Aiden "AJ" (6) Caitlyn (4), and Alexander (1). While we've had the good fortune of traveling all over the world, spending time with the grandchildren has been the most rewarding.
In 1994 I retired early from my nursing career as Director of Nursing Services at Schick Shadel Hospital of Santa Barbara to pursue creative writing. Since then I have published fiction, nonfiction and poetry in a variety of literary magazines and anthologies. My ...Expand for more
most recent work, "How to fall in Love with your Library," appeared in the anthology, "Library Book, writers on libraries," edited by Steven Gilbar. The book is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Santa Barbara Central Library. Does anyone remember "studying" at the Shoreline Public Library? If so, you may see yourselves in the story.
"Death, Another Country" (about my sister, Nancy Pirie's death) appeared in the Chattahoochee Review as the recipient of the Lamar York Nonfiction Prize, and was also named a notable essay by Best American Essays in 2008. Other works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry have appeared in the Los Angeles Review, the Louisville Review. New Millennium Writings, Minnetonka Review, bosque, Miramar, Other Voices, and elsewhere.
Cheers!
Susan (Pirie) Chiavelli
