Susan's Story
We lived in the suburbs before moving to a 100 yr old farmhouse on 6 of a 36 acre farm. Just prior to moving a dog showed up at our doorstep. He was a very friendly Brittany Spaniel, a pure bred dog we later found out but the 6 of us kids didn't care. My parent's said we couldn't keep him he obviously belonged to someone. He had come to us with a collar on but no contact info. We posted a flyer in the neighborhood and in the newspaper. We didn't get a response so when it came time to move "Snoopy" came with us. That was summer of of 1968. Snoopy loved the farm and ran and played in the fields and pond behind the house. Snoopy became the constant companion of my 4 yr old brother.
One Saturday the next December a car stopped in the middle of the road and the man driving stared into the yard. Then he turned his car around and pulled into our drive claiming that Snoopy was his dog....Expand for more
Seems Snoopy had escaped the yard where he was kept by this man who did live near our old home. The man said he was a very expensive dog. He wanted to take the dog right then but my Mother said she had to discuss it with my Father when he came home and then she would call him. We were devastated and begged her not to let him take "our" dog. When my father came home and verified the man's story he did come and take Snoopy from us. It was a very sad day for all of us.
Then 1 week before Christmas the man shows up on a Saturday morning with Snoopy and says "take him, he's been miserable couped up in my small yard and he has done nothing but whimper for over a week now. I can't stand it he'll be happier here." Snoopy bound from the car and never looked back. Years later when he passed away my youngest brother kept his collar on his bedpost for a long time.
