Susan's Story

The now picture was taken recently at my office. The then picture is me holding my baby brother, Michael, in June of 1964. He was 4 months old at the time. After graduating in 1964, I attended Hudson Valley Community College, then SUNY at Albany. After trying several majors, I finally settled on Anthropology as it was a little bit of everything and very interesting. The fact that it didn't lead to many job opportunities didn't bother me much at the time. My sister Bonnie and her husband, John, had moved to Tucson, AZ. so I decided to join them with thoughts of getting my master's degree at the University of Arizona. For various reasons that did not happen, so instead I got a K-12 teaching certificate by taking a few classes at the U of A. I taught for several years, not liking it very much at all. One summer I filled in for John's dad's bookkeeper at the family business and stayed on for about the next 25 years through two new owners. John and I married in 1979 and are now looking forward to retirement in a few years. My mom (now 91), baby brother Mike (now 47) and niece Heather (who would shoot me if I told her age) all live in New York so I get back there about once a year. They are up in the Hoosick Falls, Cambridge area. I loved the desert from the first morning I woke up here but John, who has lived here all his life, would literally like to see greener pastures. December 2015 we will be on the road. True to form, I'm a little older than John, so I may work a few years longer until we can retire together. I've always envisioned living in the islands somewhere but after watching House Hunter's International I may have to revise that idea! The Islands a...Expand for more
re a bit expensive. Update Oct. 2011: My mom passed away on Oct. 13th. 2011. In going through old family photos, I realized just how pretty she was. She was a great mom and for that I thank her - far more liberal than most of her generation. April 2013 - Sad news - My brother, Mike Gannon, who was born when I was in my senior year, passed away. He was only 49 but had heart trouble. I was looking forward to retiring and spending summers in New York with him and my neice Heather. I won't get that opportunity now. My mom passed away a little more than year ago. Of my siblings only me and my older brother, Ben, are left. Seems strange to say that. Aug 2013: Had another rattle snake on the front porch Saturday. This makes the 3rd one in the last 2 years at this house. Kind of hoped they had moved on. The new subdivisions being built nearby keep them stirred up. Have encountered about 10 since moving to Tucson. When we lived way west of town, we used to shoot them, skin them and tan their hides but now we call the rural fire department to have them "re-located". Much greener! 3rd snake is probably the same one just returning each year. Jan 2014: My nephew, my brother's son, Ben, who was only 40, died unexpectedly on the 13th. He had been sick with a cold or flu and the doctors think it infected his heart. He left a wife and 5 year old son. I feel so sorry for my brother. No parent should ever have to lose a child and Bennie was his only child. My brother, who is 76, says he has to "get healthy" so he can stick around to help raise Beckett. Only child, only grand child. Step one in the RV quest: Just bought a white, 2004 GMC, 4x4, 3/4 ton diesel truck.
