Susan's Story

Hi anyone interested in me! I was a pretty quiet, insecure, always stressing to make "A's" and trying to fit in, while in high school. Today, I am not so quiet, still stressed, but know that I am a much loved person by many people. I work as a 1st grade TA at Knollwood Elementary and love what I do. "My children" each year bring me such joy seeing them learn. I married Charles L. Abernethy in 1973 and we had 3 daughters and 1 son. My last daughter was born when I was "40". Surprise of all surprises! In 1997 my Charlie died of a glioblastoma brain tumor, leaving me with a 9 year old, a 15 year old, a 17 year old at home and a 19 year old at UNC-Chapel Hill. With the help of my friends. family and church family, we made it through that really horrible time. My children are my success story. My oldest Melinda and her husband Kevin are both MD's. Melinda is an OBGYN and Kevin is in Medicine-Pediatrics at University of Michigan Hospital Systems.(Both UNC med grads.) Brad and his wife Kira both graduated with degrees in Environmental Science (UNC-Asheville). They just purchased 140 acres of land in Lovingston, VA., and Brad is hoping to soon start his dream of creating a "green" community there. (They own their own mountain! Isn't that neat?) Katie is a Lutheran Youth Minister near Hickory; teaches Theater Arts in the Conover School System and this summer is directing a children's play at the Hickory Community Theater. rey followed in Katie's footsteps and is going to Lenoir-Rhyne University. She is studying Sports Medicine, but wants to be a physical therapist. She was a soccer player and was Captain of her soccer team at West Rowan her last two years there. My other 3 graduated from "Boyden". They have been my inspiration in what they have accomplished. My oldest went to college on full scholarships( worked to have speinding money) and my 3 youngest have worked and borrowed to acheive their goals. My biggest disappointment in life thus far is that I have "no, nada, 0 grandchildren!!! My mom died 2 years ago at 88 and I am #1 caregiver for my 90 year old dad. My best friend is still Gail Burton. The bubbly blonde that came to Boyden our senior year. She married Richard Sutliff, (a Navy Commander) and had 4 daughters. We have stayed constant friends even though she has not lived in Salisbury since 1968. We still act like 18 year olds when we are together. 60 thus far has been a bummer!!. Woke up 1 morning with vertigo, fell over a rug and hurt my rotator cuff and now am going to have gall bladder surgery 8-24. Oh, but all this will pass. I still love Rock and Roll and my biggest compliments have been made by my children's friends who say I am easy to talk to and act much younger than 60. So, I guess it's all in the mind (now if my body would just listen). So, I have made this into a novel. Hope not to boring! Peace, love and rock 'n roll. Susie
