Susan's Story
Susan Carol Wood Jersey. Entered Franklin College after FCHS. Quit in December of my first year. The only good thing about that experience was I pledged Pi Beta Phi. Moved to Chicago where my brother was an attorney. Lived at a girl's club sponsored by the Methodist Church, The Melrose Club, and worked as a clerk typist at Corn Products Company (Company name later changed to CPC International.) where I met Leonard William Jersey. Quit CPC after six months and entered Loop Junior College. Graduated from Loop in December of '64 and married Len 12/19/64. Transferred to Chicago Teachers College. Lived in a third floor walk up within walking distance of CTC and graduated in April of '67. Taught for the Chicago Board of Education until the end of that school year. Worked for Household Finance, Channel 11 and Paramount Pictures until 1972 when I had our first son, Mark. In 1974 I had our second son, Michael. In 1970, before Mark was born we bought a home and moved to Palatine, IL, a northwest Chicago suburb. I was a homemaker and worked for The Daily Harrald part time until Mike entered first grade in 1980. I worked as a teachers aide from 1980-84 when I entered Northeastern Illinois University and competed my MA in SPED, Special Education, in '86. ...Expand for more
I taught one year for Clearbrook Center, a private SPED school for adults and then taught for SEDOL, Special Education District of Lake County until I retired June 10th. During the 21 years I taught for SEDOL, my sons grew up. Both earned their B.A. at EIU and Mike also earned a M.A. in Guidance & Counseling. Mark was diagnosed with cancer, Non Hodgkin Lymphoma, in June of 1995. Len and I divorced in August of '95. Mark passed away June 3, 2001. When I retired this June I sold my home of 38 years and moved to Wesley Estates Retirement Community in Macomb, IL where Mike and his wife Cathy live and work. I'm active in Wesley United Methodist Church, YMCA, Senior Citizens, AARP and I volunteer at Wesley Village and an elementary school. Mike owns a sports memorabilia store on the square, The Dugout, and I spend as much time there as I can. I have a dog, Millie, and a cat, Rasta. I also have two grand-doggies, Duke and Wrigley. Life is good and I'd enjoy hearing about your life and interests.
Take care, Sue
