Susan's Story

In 1968 I went to Hamburg, Germany for a college year abroad. My first week there I met Peter - my husband of 40+ years. Our anniversary is June 19th. Our first daughter, Tina was born in Hamburg in 1973. Lisa was born in Milwaukee in 1977. We had returned to the US to live near my parents in December of 1974 and raised our girls in Oak Creek. We planned to move to Mesa, AZ just as soon as Lisa graduated from college and Peter turned 55 (in June, 2000), but ended up staying until September. Both daughters got engaged Christmas Eve, 1999. Lisa married in June and Tina in September. What a year! We paid for 2 weddings, sold our house, moved to AZ without jobs and began remodeling a home we had bought there in 1993 and had rented out for 7 years. We currently live in Leisure World - a senior community in Mesa. It's a wonderful place with tons of ammenities. Here we learned to play our new passion - doubles tennis! We even play in a league. After we returned from Germany, I went back to school at MATC and got an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene - sounded better than nursing as the pay was comparable and the hours MUCH better. Peter worked as a painter for Marquette University and Tina was able to get her degree there for free - a great perc. Lisa decided to go to Martin Luther College in Minnesota to become a teacher. Tina and husband Joel live ...Expand for more
in Wauwatosa. She's a team supervisor for a big travel company and Joel is a police dispatcher/911 operator for a nearby city. Lisa is a stay-at-home mom of 4 kids - Jonah 81/2, Ethan almost 7, Molly 4 1/2 and Chloe 2. Her husband, Jason, is a principal and teacher at a Lutheran school near Minneapolis. I have a great job as a hygienist with a fantastic doctor only 3 miles from home and Peter has his own painting business. We travel frequently, enjoy good health and live in a place where it seems like you're always on vacation at a fancy resort. Life is good! The newest addition to my "story" is that I'm retiring on my Bday Feb. 3rd. I will now be able to play tennis every day if I want. Also plan to take up colored pencil drawing and spend more time in the gym. Who would have thought that I'd grow to LIKE exercise?! Peter and I have a road trip planned for this summer to include The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Dinosaur National Monument in CO, Colorado Springs to visit brother Larry and, of course, Minnesota and Wisconsin to see the kids and grandkids. We probably will also stop in Custer, SD to see how the Crazyhorse monument is coming along and camp at one of our favorite places - Custer State Park. I'll also be keeping up on my continuing education and license renewal so that I can temp when we want more cash for trips. Life is really good!
