Susan's Story
(Updated: May 2023) After growing up in Campbell and attending Hamilton School and Campbell Grammar School, my family moved right before high school. Instead of attending Campbell High I went to Del Mar High. I graduated from Del Mar in 1967 and went to UC Davis and earned a degree in English and French. I obtained my teaching credential at Notre Dame College in Belmont and married my husband, Matt, in 1972. I worked as a second grade teacher in San Leandro and then our son was born. He is 45 and lives in Washington state. He now works for Amazon, and has a 13 year old daughter. Our daughter, now 41, graduated from UC Davis and has a business coaching solo estheticians after owning her own day spa for almost 20 years. She and her husband, (who works for Apple) live in San Jose. They have two daughters, 10 and and 7, so we are blessed to have three granddaughters! We have lived in San Jose all of our married life. After staying home raising kids, I went back to teaching second grade in the San Jose Unified School District, and retired from full time teaching in 2006. several years before the granddaughters arrived, and then I gave up subbing for babysitting! We still help out whenever we can, as now the girls are older and attend school. I am active in the Assistance League of San Jose as well as DKG International, a group of women educators. Matt is now retired from the Assessor's Office. We enjoy traveling, gardening, reading and puttering around the house. In recent years we've traveled to England, Scotland, Greece, New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, and Ireland, Israel, Jordan, the Czech Republic, Eastern Canada and the Maritime Provinces, and New England to see the fall colors. Covid has certainly curtailed many of our activities the last three years, but we have been fortunate and have not gotten it thus far.
I LOVED reconnecting with friends and meeting new ones at our 50th class reunion! The committee worked so hard to make it wonderful and special, and it lived up to that in every way! The "70th Birthday Party" at Vasona was fabulous! I feel lucky to be healthy, alive and able to enjoy life every day! I look back fondly on my days at Del Mar and would love to hear from old friends!
