Susan's Story
Life
After graduating from Westminster HS in 1961, I attended Hastings (NE) College, getting my BA in Drama/Speech/English Secondary Education in 1966. I taught in Ogallala, NE for a year, then moved to Aurora, CO, where I taught middle school Speech/Drama for 2 years. In March of 1968, I met my husband, Jim, a cartographer for the Geological Survey, and we were married that Dec. 27. In 1969, I transferred to Jefferson County Schools, teaching English at Jefferson and Bear Creek High Schools before accepting the Theatre position at Columbine HS in 1973. While at CHS, I directed over 80 shows until I retired in 2001, after 35 consecutive years of teaching teens! Between productions and while teaching full-time, I managed to get my MA in Education in 1987. On vacations, Jim and I travelled--sometimes overseas, sometimes closer to home. We've climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan and Mt. Ararat in Turkey, ridden ...Expand for more
camels in Jordan, snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, bicycled in France, Australian Outback, Holland, and Belgium, and trekked in Nepal, Peru, Iceland, and Greenland to name a few of our more exotic experiences. October 2010, we traveled to S. Korea, as the S. Korean government sponsored and partially paid for veterans and spouses to return to see the progress made in the past 60 years and to thank the Vets for their service. (Jim had served there in 1951-52 as part of the 1st Marine Division). After my retirement, we enjoyed off-season vacations, mid-week snowshoeing, hiking, bicycling, and swimming, --obviously an active lifestyle--with friends. Between adventures, I still do volunteer storytelling as a Jeffco storyteller at Devinny Elementary three days a month. We were able to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in December, 2018 with a trip to Maui before Jim passed away in June of 2019.
