Suzanne's Story
I don't know about you all, but thankfully, who I was in High School turned out to be some other person I do not recognize now. And so, I begin with an apology to anyone and all for any hurtful, gossipy thing I did as an under-developed brained teen. There, it probably doesn't get me off the hook for any of my dastardly deeds, but I feel better.
Life, real life, began after June 1969, and seemed to speed on by and with me. I remained single, working full time, college at night and traveling until I was 27. I married at 27, and began teaching elementary school in El Toro. Divorced at 30. Big lesson, know yourself. I continued to teach third grade and travel with friends. and father of our two children, Barry Martin. Barry was a marriage and family therapist and avid backpacker and kayaker. Hannah was born a year later, Eli followed 11 months after that. Hey at 37, one has hurry! I was a stay at home mom for nine years during which I studied Spanish and received my bilingual teaching credential. We lost Barry to cancer in 2001 after a two year battle. The children were 12 and 13 at the time, it was a most difficult and sad time.
I retired after 29 years of teaching in 2015, yet still stay active in education part time as a literacy intervention teacher during the school year, and teaching English to International students each summer. I travel some, and am especially enjoying road trips to our amazing national parks.
