Sylvia Gowen's Story

Life Immediately following high school I left for Europe 3 weeks and six countries. The following February 1968 I married my first husband David Smotherman. In March 1969 I had my first son David Glenn Smotherman Jr. I worked after high school at G.C. Murphy Company. In 1971 I went to work as a secretary at American Manufacturing Company. In 1972 my 1st marriage ended. 1976 I went to work at Vincent Printing as a Credit Manager worked there for 2 years. In 1977 I went to work for IBM as a service rep. My job was traveling around the city repairing typewriters, word processors and later personal computers. 1982 I married Bill Pollard and in 1985 IBM crossed-trained me into the intermediate systems division where I worked on almost anything IBM made from monitors, printers, tape drives, point of sale and intermediate systems. I am on call 24/7 and my territory extends from Chattanooga, west to Tullahoma Tn and South to N. Georgia. I am subject to being called out at 2 am to drive to Tullahoma or some other fun place. In 1990 I divorced again and in 1993 I married my current husband Rick Gilbert (a keeper). At forty, I went to UTC for about a year, to experience college life. I discovered it was tough to work full-time and try to go to school. I learned a lot and hey, now I can say "some college" whenever I fill out any profile!!! I have now been with IBM 30 years and eligible to retire, which I plan to do in 2009. My job is working on the larger systems, but my hobby is messing with personal computers. Up until recently, I had been running since 1978 and have competed in hundreds of road races in 28 years. Several 1/2 marathons ...Expand for more
including one that started at the foot of Lookout Mountain and went to the top, finishing at Covenant College and 11 Peachtree Road Races, as well as six Crescent City Classics in New Orleans. Now at 57, I have "back issues" and my run is now a walk, I used to run 5 and sometimes 10 miles, 5 days a week. Now it's walk one mile (maybe). A few years ago I added weight training, which I try to squeeze in 3 days a week. I also love gardening, watching birds, and I am constantly redecorating my house or playing with my two dogs, Punkie and Stinkie. My real passion is genealogy. I now have over 1000 names in my family tree. I have tracked down descendants of my GGGGrandfather, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a life long friend of Davy Crockett. We are in the process of restoring our family cemetery in Lynchburg, TN where he was laid to rest. I also discovered in my research, I am 1st cousins of "Jack Daniels"!!! Not a big stretch when considering Mom and Dads ancestors were all from Lynchburg. My son David owns a retail store on Frazier Avenue, in N. Chattanooga called "Winder Binder Gallery of Folk Art". He also sells tin wind up toys made of molds of the 50's and 60's. David grew up well, in spite of me. He is a graduate of UTC, where he still is very active in Alumni activities. David turned 38 on March 20th 2007. He has never given me a moments trouble. He is not currently married, but has been once, no children. My Dad is still living 81 and doing great. My Mom passed away 6 years ago of cancer. I still live near Chattanooga on Signal Mountain and I absolutely love it up here. Life is good!!! Sylvia Gilbert 3/17/07
