Tom's Story
So many of my casual acquaintances from my younger years will not remember me. (I kinda blended into the background in my high school years in Colorado). But, maybe, a couple will remember. I was in Arvada ’55 – ’65 … Secrest Elementary, 7th Grade Jr High (an overflow facility when Arvada was having too much growth for the schools to keep up}, then (8th grade) the old Arvada Jr High, then North Arvada Jr High, then Arvada High School. … Most of my friends were involved in drama… for example, “Tom Sawyer” at Secrest School, “True Blue and Trusted” in 9th grade at North Arvada Jr. High (“Balderdash Trustworthy” here, Hello!) and so on and on and on. My fam moved to California early in my senior year, so …. new high school and graduation way out west. Stayed in drama thru senior year in California… even doing some Shakespeare – as the wicked Richard III - at a high school competition put on by UCLA (… and let me tell you, those drama-majoring kids from Beverly Hills High, kids carrying their parents’ star genes, are killers). Then, a year of junior college (journalism, more drama, athletics (a very late bloomer in sports)… etc. etc. etc. Then army (Military Police, ’67 to ’70). Cal State University in early 70’s. Then, after graduating, a builder and real estate broker. My wife, Maria, an Italian fashion designer, started her career from desig...Expand for more
n school in Milan, Italy (her native country) … and eventually, she became a very talented businesswoman in California. Our 40th anniversary is in November of this (2021) year. 3 kids, 5 grandkids. We’re now living in a small California town best known for wineries hot air balloons, western restaurants, etc. My brother, Terry, was at North Arvada Jr. High when we moved to Calif. He’s still active as a construction contractor in So Cal. And, some of you who lived in Arvada would have known my mother… She taught at the Jerry Poteet School of Dance in Arvada for many years. She’s still quite lively and enjoying life (at age 93) living with my sister Jayne, and Jayne’s husband, in beautiful Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Favorite activities for Maria and I, in our 70’s: Working, camping at the beach, sailing, writing screenplays (non-professionally, so far!), and going to Carmel for occasional weekends. Maria still wants me to see her home town In Italy. She’s been twisting my arm for decades. But I don’t like flying, at least not over thousands of miles of water. In spite of that, I’ve agreed. Before we are 80, it will happen. Probably. 😊 Anyway, I think often of Arvada… (miss the beautiful Colorado skies and uncrowded mountains of the 50’s and early 60’s!)... and miss the very good times, and good people, of long ago.
