Diana's Story

When I was in school I was a very quiet girl and somewhat of a loner because I was raised by two very strict old-fashioned Italian/Sicilian parents and I was not allowed to date (until I was in college) or go to any sporting events except for the football games - which I LOVED. But I could only attend the games if I worked at them as a Lettergirl selling programs or something like that. Even then, they were in the car right outside of the football field waiting to hear the final bell - then I had only 5 minutes to get to the car OR ELSE ! ! ! After I graduated from Cleveland I went to Pierce College to get my Associates Degree -- and start dating --- and I had a great time. No more wallflower. I learned to dance and 1 week after I turned 21 yrs old (required by strict Italian families - to live at home until you were a legal adult, that is) I got my own apartment and a good job with Litton Industries. Then I discovered the "Bourbon Square" in Van Nuys - Victory & Sepulveda - where I danced 8 nights a week. If nothing else it kept me in great shape (Size 3) and gave me a LIFE. I suddenly had a lot of new friends to spend my evenings and week-ends with & who invited me to parties. And many of these wonderful people became lifetime friends. I myself, am now divorced. My marriage only lasted for 4 years because I am a little obsessive about paying things off so as not to have money worries (bill collectors on our back), but my husband was great for saying "just charge it honey and I'll pay the bill" (since they were my credit cards). Then when the bills arrived he always had something else he wanted to spend his money on saying "Hey, the bills will still be there next month, but...Expand for more
this (whatever it was that he wanted to spend his money on) may not still be available". SO --- bye-bye husband, and I have done just fine on my own ever since. I now have a 28 year old son who also lives in Reseda and is still single. I have raised my son all alone with no help at all (monitarily or physically) from his father. Unfortunately, I'm not a grandma yet (something I really am looking forward to) because my son says that all of his friends that have gotten married are divorced already, so he's wondering if he wants to chance it. I'm glad he's not doing what his cousin has done though (2 kids - 2 different mothers - and not one marriage), because when I do get grandchildren I'm going to want to spend a LOT of time with them, not just every other weekend. Over the years I have done a large variety of jobs - waitress, data control clerk, receptionist, sales etc., but I think my all-time favorite job was the 12 years I spent as a licensed Pharmacy Technician. I really like the medical knowledge I obtained at this job. Not only what I learned about medication, but also all that I learned from the doctors who came in to talk to the pharmacist. You'd be amazed what they discuss with each other. I now have been on social security disability for over 5 years due to some health problems I have, but I do hope to be able to return to the work force again. I would really like to reconnect with some of my classmates who might remember me, but since I was such a loner back then, I doubt that anyone will remember enough about me to contact me. But if anyone does and would like to talk, I still live in Reseda and I am listed in the phone book. Hope to hear from one or two of you.
