Tammy's Story

UPDATE 3/09: I used to post a long story of my life and how I lost my beloved husband to medical malfeasance (heart disease) on Halloween 2002. I removed the long story because it was just too depressing for anyone to want to read so let's just say that I am a widow with three amazing kids. The last one was born 3 months posthumously. They are 21, 15 & 6. All great in school, dedicated, loving, outgoing, etc...I could fill the pages of a book discussing their attributes and achievements. I work at a Starbucks near my home in Simi Valley bringing in a little extra money. The benefits are amazing. Where I used to spend $1000 a month on health insurance, I now get it for very little each month by working only part time. I do miss having a career but I don't miss the daily 3 hour round trip commute to Santa Monica. In my spare time when I'm not running the girls around everywhere I like to bake, craft, crochet and sing. I do have a very nice singing voice ((which I inherited from my biological mother - she was a singer and Doris Day's late husband (Martin Melcher) was her manager))...so I sing a lot and feel that music just plain and simple makes me happy. I have been blessed to be a part of several extended families. Even though I grew up dancing, my girls and I are (on rare occasion) car dancers...lol and what I mean by that is that occasionally (for fun) when we are sitting at a red light we might dance in our seats to the music. We sometimes get stares and laughs and claps but it makes us happy and it's fun. My middle daughter is an accomplished dancer (having danced for 13 years and she's only 15) and attends a magnet HS that specializes in the arts and an academic education and she is aiming for a full ride to college (hopefully.) I have done some side contract work with embroidery and other crafty things, cakes, etc. My cookies can rival Mrs. Fields and my cakes are off the hook. I love photography and years ago (in the pre-digital era) have won awards for some of my photos. I played hockey for 5 years which I suppose came easy to me since I grew up playing golf with my parents. My biological grandfather was drafted by Jack Adams to play for the Detroit Red Wings so I suppose you can say that hockey is in my blood. LOL...so much for all the figure skating lessons I took when I was a kid, huh? They should have given me a stick instead. TOEPICKKKKKK. There is a certain euphoric feeling about watching the sun set on the ocean and so a few times a year I like to eat a nice meal doing so (usually at Dukes in Malibu.) Kauai would be nice (I really love looking out over Bali Hai Point with a nice warm tropical breeze blowing,) but mostly I enjoy spending a nice evening at home cooking a nice meal, watching a movie, eating my delectable tiramisu (which my family and friends crave), having a nice glass of wine (my favorite is Gryphon Pinot Noir) or one of my signature Grey Goose or Ketel One martinis on occasion and laughing at least a dozen times a day. To me that is the secret of living a long life. Well, good people, laughter ... and love. Me? I'm doing well. I have great friends who I love and cherish a lot. They are all amazed at the strength of surviving losing my husband at a young age. It hasn't been easy although I suppose a great part of it is how you look at the world and how life takes turns and throws you a curve ball to see if you duck or attempt to catch it. I suppose that it is something I was born with...I've always been a glass half full gal and also because I watched my father die when I was five. My mom remarried within a year after my father's death and I was very accepting of my first step-father. He was a father to me as is my current step-father. I have always believed that you can never have too many friends or too much family. Our hearts have enough love for everyone. Life is short. Every day is the time to live it. Let's just say this...I wake up and smile every day and am rarely in a bad mood. No matter what has been thrown at me in life, I am a survivor and happy to be here with the amazing people I have in my life. I only need one more thing to complete it again. I used to have a great career and used to work in both construction and entertainment. My last "career" based job was working for a Veterinary practice management company. For now I appreciate the fact that I can work part time so my girls can keep their after school activities. I will probably return to having a career in a year when my youngest is in school longer during the day...and hopefully without having to commute far. My son is planning on transferring to a 4 year college back east and when he does I won't have his help with the girls so I am hoping to find a great job close to home that will pay me well just in case I need to run home quickly. ...but realistically in Simi Valley, that's not likely to happen. I suppose I will have to commute back to the cit...Expand for more
y again...(oh well.) Well that's my story for now. Anyone who read my previous longer bio would know that my life is an open book and if anyone wants to know anything about me all they have to do is ask. Don't be a stranger and feel free to drop me a line and write me. If you drop me a note I promise to respond. Remember, life is short so don't be a stranger. Thanks for reading and take care. Love, laughter & hugs, Tammy My middle daughter wrote an award winning poem when she was 10 winning the California PTA Reflections for the State in 2005. Anyone interested in reading Kelsey's Award winning poem can look for it through this link: Put 3 w's and a colon and then the following: capta.org/sections/programs/downloads/ReflectionsWinners2005-color.pdf You need to scroll down and it's on the right hand side of the page under "Literature". There are two typos that they put in there when they published the poem for the State Awards program but I'm sure you can figure out Kelsey's inflection. Grab your tissues if you read it. This poem made thousands of people cry at the convention in Sacramento when she read it for them. Hugs to all of you, Tammy :-) School Mrs. Pam Hamashita, Mr. Bell & Mr. Gielow were my favorite teachers. My circle of friends (mostly in JSA and drama). Being Reseda HS CIF Badminton champs in 1980. (Go ahead and laugh but badminton can be challenging...those birdies sting when they hit you going super fast.) I suppose I could have joined the tennis team. I was good at tennis too. I loved going to NYC with Mr. Bell and the drama kids on Christmas break in 1980. I was sort of invisible in HS, I mean I had friends, lots of them, but I brought a boy from another school to our senior prom because no one from school asked me...just like all the school dances...including my 6th grade dance...I didn't really "bloom" until after HS. I'm not sure if because the boys were intimidated by me or if it was because I wasn't attractive enough...I know I was bubbly enough...maybe it was because I was considered geeky being in JSA and all. I didn't ditch school, not even on senior ditch day...oh well, I don't have any particular memories that stand out in my head right now other than my trip to NYC with drama in 1980. I placed flowers on the stoop of the Dakotas two weeks after John Lennon's murder (on New Years Eve.) There was something very ominous in doing that. I do remember going to the football games on Friday nights and then to Casa d Pizza on Victory afterward. I'm going to spend some more time thinking about it and see if I can come up with something really cute or funny to say for this section...LOL. Hey, also, in case you missed it, I went to 3 different Junior High schools. I guess my mom liked moving around every year. You have to be a very outgoing person to adapt to making friends every year. For those who may know me I went to my schools in the following order: Roscomare Road Elementary, Bel Air, CA - 1st thru 6th grade Sequoia Jr. High, Reseda, CA - 7th grade Emerson Jr. High, West Los Angeles, CA - 8th grade Holmes Jr. High, Northridge, CA - 9th grade Reseda High School, Reseda, CA - 10th thru 12th grade I loved my 20th Reunion for Roscomare Road school in 1996. That was so much fun. It's not common to hear of an elementary school having a reunion, but it was so much fun and I hope we have more. Thank you to all of those that planned that fun event and keep me posted if there will be more. Roscomare had a 50th "Birthday" Reunion and I missed it (sadly.) I'm sorry I missed the Reseda HS 20th reunion. It was held just a month before my husband's death and my reason for not attending isn't really worth mentioning. Ironically, my son was playing on the same hockey team as Dave and Kari (Brill) Gibson's son at the time of the reunion....and for weeks leading up to the reunion I kept trying to figure out where I knew Kari from. I won't miss another one....that's for sure. I hope to hear from all my friends from school. I am always looking to add to my network of friends. Whether you live near or far, I'd really love to hear from you. Workplace I worked hard for many years right up until 10 months before my husband died. I worked in several fields including construction and entertainment doing things like accounting, purchasing, doing take offs on bids, construction contracts all the way up being an executive assistant to up to 5 people at once (not an easy task to master.) I worked for MGM, George Lucas's Skywalker Sound (a div of LucasArts), Sega GameWorks (a div of DreamWorks SKG)...gosh too much to list. Now I just enjoy being a mom, homemaker and Barista. Military I am thankful for the many soldiers that put their lives on the line for our country. I cannot even imagine the horrors that they face daily in the middle east. We are truly very lucky to live in a free country.
