Ted's Story

Life After waking up on a pool table at 6:00 one morning in a city I did not recognize, I decided the hard life of rock and roll was for others. I finished my history degree, about one-half of a Master's Degree in American History, and completed law school at the U of Iowa (with distinction). I met my wife-to-be there, a recent nursing graduat, and we moved together to California in 1986, where I passed the bar (first try) and practiced law for 12 years in Silicon Valley. During that time I began writing magazine articles and then books (all history-related). In the meantime, I built and sold my law practice (1998), built and sold a publishing company (2001), and have launched another publishing endeavor, Savas Beatie LLC (2004), which you can read about on the web at savasbeatie dot com. I teach law and history classes at night at the college level. The inability of young people to think clearly, articulate a coherent thought, write, read, and comprehend is disastrous for our country's future. I'm still married to the greatest love of my life, Carol (21 years). She was a clinical nurse for nearly 20 years, but went to the darkside four years ago to join a large California insurance company--Blue Shield. Carol has set up its dialysis program for the state of California. We have two kids. Alexandra Maria is 17, a Sophmore at Santa Clara University (she attended an all-girl's private HS which was the best education and worth every dollar. (She skipped 6th grade). She is a pianist just like her old papa (I was good-she is great), and an all around wonderful girl. She loves conservative /libertarian politics like me, and can talk philosophy, history, art history, and tax policy until the cows come home. I took her diving in the Dominican Republic, and we plan many more trips together. We put in a pool a few years ago and makes coming home more enjoyable. Here teen years were calm ones. I recall what we all used to do at 14, 15, 16 . . . Yikes! My son is Demetrious Theodore (or DT). He is 13 and and attends a public middle school. He is a great athlete (unlike me). DT plays a lot of baseball, and I had the pleasure of coaching him for five years (we won AA Championship a few years ago). He is also a 2nd degree black belt in Tai Kwon Do, was on the Olympic Sparring Team and won a silver medal in national competition. He "retired" to focus on music (Sax), baseball, and academi...Expand for more
cs. DT is also handsome as the devil and acts like one. Like I was when I was young, he is always on the edge of trouble (Scott Marrs' mom would not let him play with me because I was such a demon), so the Big Guy upstairs is paying me back. DT spends as much time in the school hallway as I used to, and warms the chair in the principal's office on occasion. He is a joy to raise, though, has a zest for life, and lights up every room he enters. I wish I had three more just like him. Meanwhile, I retain a thinning veneer of youth. My passion is writing and editing non-fiction books (and ghostwriting for others). I have written/edited 15 titles under my own name (seven languages), and my last co-authored book won best Georgia history book of the year. Two of my titles have been national book club selections, which is very humbling. I have recently turned to historical fiction (Historical-sci-fi, and ancient greek/troy mystery). A co-author and I have nearly finished a screenplay ("Faces") that has garnered some Hollywood interest, and two face-to-face meetings with a director/producer who buys properties for the studio. We have our fingers crossed, and meanwhile continue on the accompanying novel. I guess Mrs. Comer's 9th grade English at John Adams paid off, even with Bill Fankell and Brian Weydert trying their best to get me in trouble. Her tactics of putting my desk up front next to hers was effective. LOL I occasionally consult on contracts, copyrights, etc. My brother Anthony and his family live two miles away. We are today, and have always been, best friends. I am losing my hair and gaining a (small) belly, but life is grand and I thank God each morning for my good fortune. I hope everyone who reads this is also doing well. My grandfather used to say find what you would do for free, and then do that for a living. The money will come. I think he is right. Do what you love, work hard, and everything will fall into place. I have never had a job. It feels good, too. I love to get to work in the morning. Thanks to those who have taken the time to email or call me over the years. I enjoy hearing from old friends. militarybooks at sbcglobal dot net. (And for those of you who used to read this: "Scott Marrs--whatever happened to you? Anyone know how to get in touch with him?--know that Scott and I have been in touch often, and I love every conversation.) Cheers --tps
