Tera's Story

Life I've moved a number of times since graduation. I've lived in Tennessee, Florida and Kentucky in addition to my home state, New York. I now live in southeast Florida where I plan to stay. I found my true love a little about 9 years ago. We married on November 11, 2000. We don't have any children together and none are planned. However, I am a stepmother to his 2 children from a previous marriage, ages 18 & 16. They do not live with us full-time. In addition to being active in our ministry as Jehovah's Witnesses, we love to hang out w/friends & family. We also enjoy the beach, cruising, camping, fishing, boating & vacationing. We're very happy together! School After graduation I didn't attend college, however, I have attended vocational school & completed correspondence courses. In addition to my NY State Regents Diploma, I hold a certificate in heavy equipment operation (to be able to assist in volunteer construction projects), auto mechanics (for my personal edification), as well as an IT certificate (just to see what level aptitude I have). I'm also NATE certified HVAC, Service & Installation along w/the necessary Universal EPA certification. I've always liked hands on kind of work. I like to know practical skills. I'm currently enrolled as a college student working towards an Associates Degree in Telecommunications. My primary goal is to mainly provide a reasonably comfortable income to support my ministry. Workplace A few years ago I changed career paths going from inside behind a desk to outside in more technically challenging fields of employment. As my work history shows, I spent many years doing office or clerical type jobs ranging from data entry, receptionist to banking & legal secretary. I got very good at it, but not having any college degrees hindered me from competitively seeking jobs I was best suited for in that field, i.e. Executive Secretary/Assistant, Office Manager, etc. The closest I came was being a personal secretary of a successful real estate attorney. I've done a few brief stints in restaurant, retail & sales. I started to shift gears in 1996 when I acquired my CDL Class B in NY back in 1996 & drove school bus for a children's center for 2.5 years. Always desiring to get into more technical & physical type work I went to BOCES & got certified in Heavy Equipment Operating, i.e. bulldozer, backhoe hoping to get into the construction field, but also to help in volunteer construction projects through my congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. When I moved to Florida in 1998 I slipped back into secretarial work, although it was predominantly within the construction industry. After going through two layoffs in a row, however, I decided it was time to get out of the office for good. That's when I went to vocational training for HVAC. I excelled in my class & was the first to be hired out fo that class by a reputable HVAC company. However, I had entered a male dominated industry. I'd always got along great w/guys growing up. I'm a bit of a Tomboy. I love sports & the outdoors, etc. But this was a different world altogether. I've never experienced total acceptance in my field & suffered harrassment & discrimination, twice leading to unexpected job loss. It's been an education in & of itself. My fairly recent work history includes having been let go from my HVAC/Facility Maintenance position, despite the fact that I was their top technician year to date at the time. I then went into other maintenance contract jobs that didn't want to pay me according to my skill level. One position I had was at a posh highrise condo on the beach doing condo maintenence & HVAC. The initial building superintendent offered me a full-time position at a good pay rate w/benefits once my contract period was up. Unfortunately, during the interim he got replaced with a different manager that went out of his way to belittle me. The maintenance supervisor, who had some say in hiri...Expand for more
ng techs told the new manager of the offer I'd been given & strongly encouraged the new manager to uphold the offer. Well, he procrastinated for a while & then finally offered me the position, but at a much lower pay rate than originally promised. I respectfully asked that he honor the original offer, but he refused basically telling me I wasn't worth the money he was offering me even then. I started to leave the job, but knowing he was treading on very dangerous ground, asked me to stay. I agreed to stay, but the next morning they wouldn't let me back onto the property as my contract had been ended. In both instances I sought legal action and/or help from gov't agencies. I won some minor battles in reference to my unemployment benefits, but was told by the EEOC I didn't have enough evidence to pursue legal action. Tough pill to swallow. While I do, however, still use my HVAC skills for volunteer construction projects as well as helping friends & family as needed, I switched gears again slightly. Fortunately, the same day I discovered I no longer worked at the condo I got a job offer from BellSouth Telecommunications, a much better paying job with benefits. However, I still hadn't gotten away from the good ol'boy mentality. My new full-time position? Outside Plant Technician, a.k.a. Lineman, doing line construction. That means that placing phone cables on the poles (yes, I climbed poles with climbers or hooks) & underground in manholes. It's hard work outside in the hot sun everyday, but I got used to it. I survived the gauntlet of the boys club mentality by not taking their crap & standing up for myself. I had to get a little ugly in the beginning to keep my job secure, which didn't make me alot of friends, but I don't regret it. In fact, I could've gotten alot uglier. LOL I did win over some of the guys though. Half is better than none. But after 2 yrs. as a lineman, I'm now inside as a Frame Technician in the Central Office. Less physical & air conditioned. LOL I went from being the only female in my entire exchange/yard to now working w/2 other women along w/several guys, & they're nice! LOL It's a good job, with great benefits & pay. Unfortunately, nothing is secure anymore. AT&T Southeast (formerly BellSouth) is currently undergoing union contract negotiations for the new contract. Strike is unfortunately an option the union may have to resort to. While I hope to keep my job w/the company, I've decided to supplement my income with a part-time business. So, my husband & I are currently in the process of getting our Florida Life Insurance & Annuity license, with our Mortgage & Securities license to follow. We've become independent contractors for Primerica Financial Services, Inc. educating clients on how to save money, make money & invest for the future. My sister, Tamara, is doing the same up in NY. We're hiring, so if you know anyone who wants to make an extra $400 a week, let me know & I'll get you started. I had my own company for a while doing printing/publishing in Kentucky with my husband after we were married. We now own our own water services company here in South Florida. My husband works that business full-time doing water filtration & conditioning; sales, service & installation. It's a good field to be in here in Florida, but the economy has slowed our growth down. Thet's why we've added the Primerica business on part-time. Who knows, one or both of us may eventually do Primerica full-time & quit our job. I like being versatile. It is NOT my desire to become filthy rich nor famous. Just to live reasonably comfortable, while maintaining control of my schedule. My employment is just my AVOCATION, a means to an end. My primary VOCATION (or career) is my ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. That's the most stable job with the greatest employer & an awesome benefits package. If I could afford to do it full-time, I would! For now, I need the secular work. ;-)
