Teresa's Story
After my father's death four days prior to the graduation commencement, I had to grow up quickly. The summer of 1980 was a difficult one, but I started AUM in the fall thanks to SSI benefits for children of deceased parents. Wanted to be a Registered Occupational Therapist, but due to Regan economics my benefits were cut, so I changed my major to Nursing the end of my sophmore year. Lacked one class to start upper division nursing at AUM, but the class was not going to be offered for a year, so I transferred to TSUM. Troy had no openings in the BSN program, so with four and a half years of college ended up with Associate of Science degree in nursing (1986). Did not like working in the acute care setting, so after a year I tried industrial medicine as a plant nurse at the GE Plant in Burkville, AL. Got married that same year (1987). get my career choice as an OTR, I got to work along side of them. It was there that I found my niche in nursing, Marketing. I was a Rehab Nurse Liaison from 1990 to 1999 and had two children during that time period. My son was born in 1992 and my daughter in 1995. Moved to Atlanta, Ga. the summer of 1999 with my husband's job only to find myself divorced in 2000. Remarried in 2005 and added two step children to my life. I am now looking forward to seeing my son from our alma mater graduate this coming year (2010) from our alma mater, my stepson next year, my daughter in 2013, and God willing, my stepdaughter in 2019. Presently working in a Long Term Care Facilty as the Staff Development Coordinator. My life has turned out better than I could have anticipated and I am truely Blessed. Hope everyone from the "Class of 1980" has had the same good fortune and I look forward to seeing my classmates at our thirty year reunion!
