Teresa's Story

Teresa was born in Aurora, Colorado, and is the eldest of three children. An Air Force dependent, she lived in 32 different locations by the age of 14, including Turkey, Greece, and Libya. When her father left the Air Force and began flying for United Air Lines, the family moved to Encino CA where she attended Mullholland Jr. High (9th grade) and Birmingham High (10th, 11/12th combined), graduating in 1970. Teresa has had many different careers, She worked as a secretary right out of high school, then attended a trade school to become an automobile mechanic in 1972. She was one of the first MS. Goodwrench mechanics for a General Motors dealership, and went on to have her own five bay auto repair facility, parts store, and wrecking yard in Longview Washington with her first husband. In the 80's, she changed directions by studying to become a fashion designer, and graduated with a BA in Apparel Design from Bassist College, studying also in Paris France. After a decade in the garment industry, she left to attend California State University, East Bay where she earned a BA in Psychology and MS in Counseling Psychology. She worked for 10 years in the nonprofit sector as a Development Director for a Battered Women's shelter, and Executive Director for a Habitat for Humanity chapter in Contra Costa County...Expand for more
. She then transitioned to work for local government, administering the federal funding granted to a variety of nonprofits. She retired from the City of Concord, CA to care for her terminally ill husband, Steve Hedani, in 2009, and presently works as a grants consultant for local government in Contra Costa County, including the City of Antioch, CA. Teresa's interests include traveling (anywhere and everywhere!), singing acapella music in a women's chorus and in a quartet, going to musical performances ranging from opera to the latest Broadway hits, volunteering to help end homelessness in CC County, and living life to the fullest. A thrill-seeker in her younger years, she used to race cars (ICSCC), skydive, scuba dive, fly single engine aircraft, and traveled extensively abroad. Says Teri: I love life and believe in living it to the fullest in the moment in which it occurs. One of Teresa's favorite quotes (her mantra since age 14) is:"One must lift up the self by the self, and one must not let the self down. For the self is the self's only friend, and the self is the self's only enemy." Rabindranath Tagore After the death of her husband, Teresa met Ben Miyaji through eHarmony and, after four wonderful years, is engaged to be married in the spring of 2015. "Life is a song, Love is the music."
