Teresa's Story
Only days after graduation, I married Larry Benns from Lincoln High. Several Kennedy friends attended the reception at the Engineer's Club on Santa Fe, We have been married 50 years this June and have four children, 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Larry's career took him all over the country including a stint in the Navy on the USS Coral Sea. He was discharged in 1977, then spent several years as a precision machinist and model maker in the Denver area. He retired from Golden Aluminum Recycling, a subsidiary of Coors, in 1999, after many years as a preventive maintenance technician.
Once the kids were older I continued my writing career, which began as an assistant feature editor for the Kennedy Statesman with Mr. Ridgway. I freelanced for religious publications in the U.S. and abroad.for awhile, then from 1992-98 I repor...Expand for more
ted for the Wilson County News in South Texas until Larry retired in 1999.
We moved to the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado and built our straw bale dream home with barley bales grown by Coors. The Valley was one of our stops during our honeymoon in 1969.
I have worked for Valley Publishing in Monte Vista for 17 years, writing community newspaper articles for the weekly Center Post-Dispatch and contributing articles to the daily publication in Alamosa, the Valley Courier. In 2012 I received the Service to the First award from the Colorado Press Association and in 2014 received the Jean Otto Friend of Freedom Award from the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition. It continues to be an interesting and exciting career.
Have enjoyed hearing everyone else's stories and sorry to be so late posting mine. Wishing everyone the very best!
