Terisa's Story

Hi, Some might remember me as Teri Schaefer. I can't remember if I went by Fowler or Schaefer in high school,(but it was definitely a time of being dazed, confused, and lost without proper guidance.) I went to both Saguaro and Chaparral as many of us did and then they brought us over to be the first class of 1974. My favorite memories from school were choir and theater. Although I loved being in choir in both schools, drama fueled my love for literature and writing. I loved going to state competition with the play, "Riders To The Sea", with Kate McReynolds and the rest of the cast, (although I can't remember them all.) After graduation, I left Arizona and landed with a Christian family in Kansas who turned my life around and showed me the guidance and love I never had with my biological family in Scottsdale. Maybe that's why I felt like such an outcast in high school. They sent me to Trinity Bible College in Texas,(where I discovered that I had enormous potential and it changed my life). From there I have lived in Alaska, Kansas, Prescott, and even Flagstaff, but after 22 years decided to move back to the Valley in 2000. It seems very surreal to be living only a few miles from where I went to high school. I received a dual B.A. and an M.A. from NAU, and went on to get my first Masters in English. Now I am working on my second Masters in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Design. During my years of absence, I traveled doing theater, sang in New York (Mozart's Requiem) at Carnegie Hall (where Kate McReynolds once said, we could have visited if only we had known the other was there!) I also owned my own restaurant at one time. Later I became a Grants Manager for an Educational Management Company and served as a District Development and Services Administrator taking care of grants,AIMS Testing, and HR policies for a short while, for a charter district, but then decided to go into teaching full time. I love teaching and have been teaching English and Literature at both the high school and college level. Since music is my first passion I married a wonderful guy who is a musician and used to play monster concerts (piano). He loves playing piano, (we have to have a separate music room jus...Expand for more
t for all his pianos, equipment and keyboards) as well as arranging and collecting film scores. Our three biological kids have grown into great adults;two girls and a boy, Shayne, Chivon and Chantelle. I am also a grandma now and love it and recently have expanded into foster care and now have a wonderful little girl whom we have adopted. We live in Peoria and I am still trying to get the decorating just the way I want it. ( I guess that takes years.) We also attend church at CCV. God has been good (seeing us through many trials and tribulations)and we are blessed. My oldest daughter graduated from ASU with a B.A.in Sociology, andhad her first child in 2004.(My first grandchild, yay!) My second daughter is into photography. My son (the baby) works with a renowned financial firm as the managing partner, and continues to play adult ice hockey and golf. I pray life after high school has been fulfilling for my classmates. We have had to endure some hard tribulations and trials(recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had complete hysterectomy and working on getting my liver healthy again from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, no don't drink or smoke or do drugs and haven't for over 36 years now. so problems w/ the liver are quite depressing.) I know some of you may have similar stories. I miss old friends and hope all are ok. I really was shocked to return and find that Nancy Gormley had passed from lung cancer. I was fond of her and remember great times at her house and at our apartment. I also recently learned that Kate McReynolds had also passed in September, 2008 from lung cancer. This was very traumatic for me. I did not find out until recently. Kate and I reconnected back in 2005 and then in 2007 via email, we applauded each other's life achievements and talked about our children, and she never told me she was ill. Nancy and Kate and I were good friends back in the day. We hung out together, spent a lot of time on that field :) and were in drama together, and got an apartment together right after graduation. When we drifted apart, I am sorry I dropped off the grid and did not keep in touch. I loved Kate so much. God Bless all of you. Please say hello if you like. I am also on FB.
