Terry's Story

I was born in Denver, Colorado and moved with my family to California when I was 3. In 1959, after several in-state moves, we settled in Thousand Oaks. I attended Park Oaks Elementary School and Thousand Oaks High School where I graduated with the Class of 1970. After graduation, I attended a computer programming school and worked at a local supermarket. Life was wonderful! Then on March 29, 1971 tragedy struck. My best friend, Michael Angelo Joseph Frattali, was killed in Vietnam. His name is listed on panel 04W of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Mike's death was a traumatic experience and I'll always feel the loss. That August I drew draft lottery number 18 and due to my good fortune at winning the lottery, I enlisted in the United States Air Force. I remained on active duty for nine years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. My assignments were at Plattsburgh AFB, NY; Gunter AFS, AL; Yongsan AI, Seoul, Korea and the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. Upon leaving active duty I transferred into the Air Force Reserve and started a new career as a U.S. Government civilian employee. I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree from the University of Maryland in August of 1982. Meanwhile, in the Air Force Reserve I attained the rank of Master Sergeant and on Septembe...Expand for more
r 15, 1986 received a direct commission as a Second Lieutenant. I was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1990, transferred to inactive Reserve Status in 1992 and was assigned to the Retired Reserve on December 13, 1996. In December 1986 I accepted a position as a GS-12 Computer Specialist with the United States Forces Korea (USFK) at Yongsan Army Garrison, Seoul, Korea and worked there for the next 10 years. In 1997 I decided it was time to leave Korea so I transferred to the U.S. Army South Central Region Civilian Personnel Operations Center at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama. Just before I left Korea, I was presented the 1997 USFK Civilian Technical Employee of the Year Award by the Commander-in-Chief, General John H. Tilelli, Jr. I also received the Commanders Award for Civilian Service and many other wonderful mementos of my stay in Korea. From Redstone Arsenal I accepted a position with the 102nd Signal Battalion at Rose Barracks in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. When the Department of Defense decided to close that installation in 2000 I transferred back to Yongsan Army Garrison, Korea where, on June 1, 2007, I retired from federal service and moved from Korea to Colorado Springs. I have three outstanding sons, Charles, Matthew, and Robert, and a very smart and beautiful daughter, Maria Ruth.
