Terry's Story

Hi everyone, Thought I'd fill in some info here, as I get frustrated when I look at others profiles and find them blank... Currently I'm Broadcast Operations Supervisor for WOUB-TV in Athens, Ohio. PBS in Appalachia has its moments (not quite the economic base of a Columbus market), but it's a great time being on the staff here. PBS has placed me on the "ATSC 3.0 Team", representing the network on the Audio subcommittee developing the next worldwide television standard! It is begging to replace our current television system, and allow many new features that people are going to love! Upon leaving OSU in 1979 with a BS in Audio Recording, I went to work at Mus-I-Col Recording Studios in Columbus as an engineer (actually started there while I was still at OSU, in 1977). Got to do some incredible work there, including assisting on a DownBeat 5 star album for Rusty Bryant, and recording the Count Basie Orchestra! Stayed there for through June of 1980, then left to become the bassist for The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Stayed with them for 3 months; went from NYC to LA and back on the bus...was a great time, but wanted to get back to a more stable job. Came back to work freelance in Audio Recording with my former studio manager from Mus-I-Col, and began playing bass with pianist Carmen Cavallaro in his trio. I stayed with Carmen for six years, and saw the world with him; Japan (a month each year), Korea, the Dominican Republic, and a great deal of the US. Moved to Chillicothe in 1981 to join the staff of The Recording Workshop in Massieville, OH. Continued there for 5 years, becoming an Associate Director, before leaving in '86 to join The Media Group in Columbus. Two years later, I left the "Group" and went to SOS Productions, where I stayed for 12 years, doing video editing and multimedia authoring. Left there in 2001 and went freelance as a DVD author, working for Wendy's International for the next 4 years. Musically, after playing with Carmen, I freelanced in the Central Ohio area, working with many groups. In 1995 I was asked to begin playing bass with The Woody Herman Orchestra, which I still do today. I've been all over the world with them as well (Sweden, Finland, Spain, England, and much of the US). I also started two record labels (one of which actually started back in 9th grade at Dominion!) and continued to record audio for many different groups across the US. I met my soulm...Expand for more
ate, Martha DeBruyne, 3 days after I turned 30 in March of '86; she walked into Max & Erma's on Kenny Rd. where I was playing for "Jazz Night", sat down at the bar, and stared at me for the entire last set! We married just over six months later in October of 1986. We have two beautiful daughters, Alison (32, an ICU Nurse at Mt Carmel East), and Lillian (28, and a Speech Language Pathologist in Lake Stevens, WA), along with three cats (Alvin, Simon & Theodore). I unfortunately lost Martha in 2021 due to a surgical complication, so I now live the bachelor life in Lancaster. My father passed away in 1992 at age 76; my Mom Passed in 2013. Martha lost her mom in 2008, and her dad passed at the end of 2014 at age 93. She grew up in in Beloit, WI (yes, I married a Cheesehead - but that's how I learned about Cheese Curds, and boy are they good!). I have three nephews and three nieces, who live across the country (from Washington state to Wisconsin), and an incredible extended family. Along with my work with Woody, I also tour occasionally with "The Local Girls", a group based in Guysville, OH (cute, huh?) - three women who sing like birds, and we do some great gigs...A Prairie Home Companion, The White House, Europe, etc - fun stuff! You can also see me a lot in the Columbus area - I'm sometimes at Dick's Den on campus, and I also play with the Famous Jazz Orchestra "the first Monday of every week" at the Clintonville Woman's Club (in da hood!) from 7:30-10pm!!! If you're still in the neighborhood, please stop by and say Hi! Lots of Alums come every week - even Mr. Susi shows up most weeks! I also play with a rock band, RiverJam, based in Charleston, WV, and with other folks around the country... I have had a run in with cancer beginning in 2007 - I was diagnosed with Advanced Prostatic Cancer, and it is a very severe and aggressive case (over 80% of the organ and a Gleason score of 9 - I really shouldn't be here now...). I was extremely lucky to have caught it just as it started, and after 15 years, I'm still above the dirt! I'm under continuous treatment at the present time, but it is under control right now. I take it all day by day, and I'm grateful to all my caregivers, who enabled me to still be walking and talking today. In my spare time, I try and take naps! All in all, I've been very fortunate in life, and am happy to still be here making some contribution to society at large!
