Terry's Story

Life I'm a happy guy, but it's not been a linear path! For someone trained in architecture, a matrix-building problem solver, I seem to've been content to go with the flow in life's currents, figuring out how to make it work wherever I was. I spent three years in the army in Germany right out of high school, providentially between Korea and Vietnam. I was in a small missile detachment, stationed with a NATO French artillery group in the Black Forest. I got to ski weekends during the winters and made an effort to learn to speak German during my army days. I was discharged there and stayed 4 more months to attend the Goethe-Institut, a German language school for foreigners. I returned to New York City on a troop ship, finishing the trip back to Bend riding Greyhound. Got after it that fall, family and school-wise, getting married and starting at Central Oregon Community College. Moved to Portland and PSU, and Peter was born. Moved to Ashland for a year at Southern Oregon College (back then). Moved to Eugene and began the 5 year architecture program. Erin was born. After while I carried a double major with German, since I had that going for me. Graduated, twice, moved to Camp Sherman where the kids attended grade school for six years, and then back to Bend. The five-plus years in Eugene in the '60's were powerful, consciousness-expanding times, personally and globally. Viet Nam, population, and energy concerns made everyone more widely responsible. (Where'd that go!) I tried architecture for a while but it was too restrictive so I went back into the ski world, gravitating to full-time coaching work in Bend and program directing in Colorado for 5 years, where Peter and Erin graduated from high school. Anne and I divorced and I married Joyce, between school -architecture, and Colorado. After a couple years back in Bend I found myself "Peter-principled" out of skiing and back in to architecture. g private homes for 5 years. Joyce joined the firm for a couple more. Then we had our own design business, working from home, for several years. We also had a small business taking small groups of people cross-country skiing in Europe. I've always been an artist, but felt constrained by the responsibilities I'd taken on with family and work. Now I'm making jewelry from rock, wood, and leather. I make beads from the rock, cutting, drilling, shaping and polishing. The wood beads are either manzanita or mountain mahogany, made from small limbs drilled lengthwise. The leather is small enough to braid and knot in 4-strand arrangements. I'm not a salesman, so moving product remains an issue. Peter's the head coach of the US Snowboard Team. He lives in Hood River, married to Amy, with kids Wyatt and Carmen. Erin's in Bend, married to Darrel, a local Fireman, with kids Sydney and Ian. As you can see, my grandkids are very important to me. Wyatt and Carmen are a ways away, but Sydney and Ian are within half a block so we see each other often. Fun! I've always been an active guy, with downhill skiing my main involvement. Makes me feel like a pioneer, starting out with edgless skis and cable bindings, moving through kid racing, into coaching at various levels, and now just a recreationist. The availability of so many outdoor activities in the Bend area gave me opportunities to learn lots of skills. I used these as training exercises for skiing, but kayaking, cross-country skiing, unicycling, road and mountain biking, trail running are all so much fun, who needs an athletic club! I believe in my body's ability to heal itself and I do what I can to support this process. I have a stretching routine I've done daily for 15 years, now, and I meditate. I've also done a LOT of misbehaving over time, and in a variety of ways. Quite a bit of fun. I'm wiser and more circumspect now, but I'm still far from reformed. Life is Very Good!
