Terry's Story
Life
Met my wife Misook at the library. We got married in '98. We have two kids - Jaeyoung born in 2000 and Liyoung born in 2004. My wife is from South Korea, so I've been there several times now. I speak pretty decent Korean too. Our kids are fully bilingual. We don't allow them to speak English to each other or to their mom. We have a HUGE family currently. My wife invited her sister and her family, and my wife's parents, to come to America and stay with us. So in addition to my own two sons, we have two nieces who live with us and all four go to school together. There's a sitcom in my life for sure... a show about a black guy who lives with a house full of Koreans who don't speak English. Everyday he comes home to a new, strange smell emanating from the kitchen. Hijinx and linguistic misunderstandings ensue!
For the 2 or 3 who knew me well in school, you know I was also into music. I still play violin and piano, and although I haven't seriously, actively composed new music since the birth of my second son, I still have a few ideas floating around that I'll record some day. I've never really pursued a career as a recording artist as I once thought I might - but it's still not too late. Workplace
Graduated from high school, went to Indiana State U. and studied Music and Computer Engineering. Wasn't a very good student. After 2 years, came home, took a few classes at Flo-valley, became involved in Internet server administration around '94 and helped Flo-valley setup their first Internet services. Also helped develop a basic Internet curriculum for their School of Continuing Education and taught classes for 4 or 5 years part-time. In '95, took a job with local ISP as a network/systems admin. Around '99, started my own ISP (you know, it was the height of the DOTCOM times). Lasted maybe a year - it was the most expensive mistake I've ever made! In 2000, focused on full-time computer programming of web applications, initially in Perl then Java. Been doing Java programming ever since. I've always been a consultant as a programmer. Some more recognizable companies I've consulted at are Mastercard, AAA and Boeing. I now market myself as an Enterprise Java Architect. That just means I'd rather have applications be built my way, than have to build them someone else's way (if I have a choice). I hope to start my own firm in 2008 or so. Right now, I work for any firm who can fetch the rate I want, but they're like pimps. I don't like being pimped!
