Terry's Story
In a very real sense I have never left school. After Cloverleaf I got a BA in Genetics from OSU and then a Ph.D in Behavioral Genetics from the University of Illinois. I had a one-year postdoc at the University of Rochester NY working on race horse genetics. I have been at Rutgers University of 30 years. I was a Professor of Genetics and Vice Chair of the Department of Genetics. Since retirement I have lived in a restored barn in PA, a house in the foothills above Santa Fe NM and now in a CCRC in Maryland. Since 2 2104 I became a Master Gardener and Master Composter. I now run the Woodshop at my CCRC
In addition to my responsibilities at Rutgers and elsewhere (replace DOT with . to get my webpage) wwwDOTlifesciDOTrutgersDOTedu/~mcguire). I have numerous hobbies and interests that I can talk about (or bore you with) at length. These include woodworking, stained glass manufacture, reading, singing, elderberry wine and beer making, genealogy, toy making and even needlepoint. This summer I completed a three-day cheese- making course in Vermont. I also grow 12 different varieties of garlic, pawpaws, and some incredibly beautiful Dahlias. Flowers, after all, make you very happy
I can proudly say that I am one of the very few people in the world who has built a coracle, erected a yurt and assembled a composting toilet. (I am probably one the few people who would ever want to!!). My most rece...Expand for more
nt hobbies are singing and truffle-making. I had the worst music teacher in the world in elementary school (remember Mrs. Hobart?) Despite her insistence that I could not sing and should never open my mouth - I now take voice lessons and occasionally sing in public. (You should have heard me do "Lydia the Tattooed Lady!). I have a dedicated set of Truffle tasters who insist that they will taste each batch until I ¿get them perfect.¿
In the last few years I have become very active in local and national teaching efforts. I am a Rutgers Presidential CASTL Fellow , a core faculty member of SENCER , a Senior Fellow of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement and a Lead Editor for Scitable - Nature Education. I have completed the NSF-funded CREATE workshops and will be teaching this course based on CREATE principles.
Finally I am a family man. I married a woman with four children. We then had one son - now 24. It takes nerves of steel to be a parent. I also have become deeply interested in genealogy. Most of my families have been in Ohio for 160 years or more. I discovered that I was related to many students at Cloverleaf. If you have any ties to the Koppes, Beck, Reich, Boyer, Leatherman, Packard, Leohr/Loehr, or Wolf families (to name a few) we are probably related. To my surprise I am distantly related (by mariage) to Reno Shearer!! ( I should probably keep that quiet).
