Terry's Story
I was born in San Antonio, TX at Brook General Hospital, at Fort Sam Houston Base. My daddy always told me I was "issued", me being a "military brat".! I lived the first 6 years of my life in San Antonio, North Carolina, Louisiana and even in France, before moving to Pasadena. From the age of 6 1/2 years old, I lived in Pasadena, TX. My dad was an Air Force Fighter Pilot, which is what brought our family to Pasadena, when he was transferred to Ellington Air Force Base. My family is from the San Marcos, TX area.
I attended Gardens Elementary, Pomeroy Elementary, San Jacinto Jr. High (where I was a cheerleader for the Tigers), South Houston High School in my sophomore year, and then my Jr and Sr years at the brand new high school, Sam Rayburn High School. I loved music, and sang in the Madrigal Choir and A Capella Choirs at both SHHS and SRHS, all 3 years of HS. I also sang in choir all 3 years of Jr High.
I lived on Vivian St., off of Harris St., near Red Bluff Rd. from the age of 6 1/2 until I married, just out of High School.
I began going with Larry Smith (now my husband) in Oct. 1961, in the 8th grade. He was one year ahead of me in school. We went together the rest of Jr High and all of High School. He also has a beautiful singing voice, and sang with me in choirs in Jr high, as well as High School. We became engaged during my senior year, and planned our wedding for after I graduated. 1966 was a happy and sad year for me, as my daddy passed away suddenly at the age of 42 in Jan. 1966, only 6 months before my marriage. I have been very blessed though, in having my mother with me to this day, as well as had a very loving step-dad for 46 years, who passed in Jan. 2014, at the age of 95.
I have 2 brothers, one 6 years younger and the other 9 years younger, who also each graduated from Sam Rayburn High School. I also had another brother, 5 years older than I, who died at the age of 30. No sisters.
In preparation for an early marriage, I also attended Cosmetology college at nights and on weekends during my senior year, along with my best friend, Marilyn Fredrigill (now Appleby), who also was planning to be married after graduation.
Larry and I married on June 24, 1966. I gave birth to our first daughter, Michelle on Oct. 27, 1967. Our second daughter, Melissa was born on Nov. 30, 1970, and later was blessed with a son, Jason, born June 27, 1978. Our children have blessed us with nine grandchildren, 6 boys and 3 girls, being born from late 1989 to late 2012. . Michelle has 4: Trevor, Trisha, Taylor and Madison. Melissa (Missy) has 3: Bradley, Brendon and Amber, and Jason has 2: Ethan and Logan. They are some of my greatest joys. Our current "babies" are two white toy poodles, Remmy and Lacy, which give us lots of love and joy! Sadly, both of our daughters and 7 of our grandchildren live far from us in the Atlanta, GA area. Facebook is the tool that has enabled me to feel closer to them.
Larry and I lived in Pasadena until 1972, at which time we moved to Clear Lake City. We moved to League City in 1981, and then moved back to Clear Lake City in 1988. We moved to Nassa...Expand for more
u Bay, living right on the lake for 2 years, until 2000, when we moved to Friendswood, where we currently live. We are members of Clear Lake Methodist Church (since 1978), being very active there while raising our children, Larry and I also singing there in the Chancel Choir for years together, but less active since the opening of our business.......but ........will always consider it our home church.
During the years of raising my children, I only worked (for pay-LOL!) a little off and on, being blessed to be able to concentrate on what I considered to be the most important job in the world......mothering! However, I did work in many volunteer capacities, such as Girl Scouts, United Methodist Women's Group Leader, and other offices of UMW, trained and served as a Strephen's Minister (a Lay Minister, helping church and community members in time of need and crisis), Church Family Coordinator (coordinating all special church family events), served on many church boards, Chancel Choir member, as well as volunteering for my children's school and sports activities.
When my last child was a Senior in High School, I went to work, as a manager for the Beauty Supply Store that I later went on to buy. ( I had also worked part-time for them when my girls were in high school, for awhile) Previously, before my last child was born, and my two girls both had begun school, I went.to work as a store manager and wig stylist for a different beauty supply store, in the mid-1970's, but only worked for about a year before I became expectant with our 3rd child.
I owned and operated a full Beauty Supply Store with Hair Salon in Clear Lake City for several years after raising my children. We closed the store/salon the last day of 2003 (sadly, in it's 25th year of business), due to several big name, chain type, competition stores opening within a mile of our business. We became another statistic for small business, losing out to the "big guys". A couple of years after closing, I went to work for one of my competitors (Beauty Brands-Baybrook as the Assistant Store Manager). Working 50 to 60 hours a week was more than I had hoped for, so after a few months, I changed jobs and went to work for a Beauty product, Wholesale Distributor as an Outside Sales Consultant, calling on hair salons in the Pasadena, Deer Park and a small part of S.E. Houston areas, for 3 1/2 years. I am retired as of 2010.
Larry and I look forward to him retiring soon, at which time we are hoping to spend several years traveling in a motor home around the beautiful USA.
One last humorous tidbit about me that most people don't know...........Gene Autry was my distant cousin. He was my maternal Grandmother's (Mina Autry) first cousin. My family was very proud of Gene's accomplishments, but became "quiet" about our relationship, after Gene fell off his horse at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, due to being inebriated! LOL! I am also proud to say that I am a direct descendant of one of the many courageous men, who died fighting at the Alamo, in San Antonio, TX. His name, Micajah Autry, is engraved on the huge granite monument there.
