Terry's Story

Military Master Chief Petty Officer Terrence G. Walker, born 24 January 1956, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, immigrated to the United States in 1966 at the age of ten. He attended high school in Pompano Beach, Florida and in April of 1975, with his fathers prompting he entered active duty, completing basic training at NRTC Orlando, Florida. Master Chief then completed Aviation Anti-submarine Warfare Operator "A" School at NATTC Millington, Tenneessee and was promoted to Petty Officer Third Class in September 1975. Next ordered to HS-1(FRS) NAS Jacksonville, Florida he completed Helicopter Aircrew Rescue Swimmer training and flight training receiving designation as a Naval Aircrewman in May 1976, and was ultimately designated a SH-3H Helicopter Tactical First Crewman assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Fifteen (HS-15) embarked aboard USS America and USS Independence. While assigned to HS-15 he completed three Mediterranean deployments, including the evacuation of civilians from Beirut, Lebanon, and other operations from June 1976 to November 1979. Then as a Second Class Petty Officer, he completed VP-31( FRS) training in July 1982 and reported to VP-19 aboard NAS Moffett Field, California. Master Chief qualified as a P-3C Non-Acoustic operator and completed three deployments to the Western Pacific, operating from Misawa, Japan to Berbera, Somalia with Patrol Wing One from 1982 to October 1986. Transferring to Fleet Aviation Specialized Operations (FASO) Training Group Pacific as a First Class Petty Officer, he qualified as a Naval Instructor and a Master Training Specialist in Electronic Warfare, instructing until October 1989. operations in November, transferring to HS-12 embarked aboard USS Midway and USS Independence forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. He participated in Operations “Desert Shield”, “Desert Storm”, and “Fiery Vigil”. He was promoted to Senior Chief during his fourty month tour of duty in Japan. Master Chief Walker then reported to NS Mayport, Florida for orders with HSL-44. When selected to Master Chief in 1994 he completed his minimum tour and volunteered for assignment as the Training LCPO at HS-10 NAS North Island, California. Reporting in October 1995, he directed the training of all carrier-based helicopter aircrewmen. He also performed as both the HS-10 and Commander Helicopter Anti-Submarine Wing Pacific Command Master Chief. He then returned to sea as a Command Master Chief with VS-38 aboard the USS Constellation in 2000. Master Chief Walker has received the following awards; Meritorious Service Medal, Strike Flight Air Medal (1), Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star (5th) award, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Medal with Bronze Star (2nd) award, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star (4th) award, Humanitarian Service Medal, Volunteer Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), and numerous service ribbons. Master Chief Walker is a graduate of the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems. He completed over 5300 flight hours during his career in five type naval aircraft. He is married to the former Susan Carey of Richmond Hill, New York, and has two daugthers, Kim and Alyson and one son, Robert. Kim is currently serving in the Air Force. They currently reside in Pacific Beach.
