Theresa's Story

Life Hi! I'm excited to maybe connect with folks who might now live in Northern VA. After college, I worked in a law firm in downtown Norfolk for awhile, and met my husband David at church. We're married over 20 years now! We have four kids ages 20 down to 3, three girls and then finally a boy, including a 9-year-old daughter who has Down syndrome, Maria. She can read (I started teaching her at age 4) but is not yet potty-trained! Every day is an adventure. My oldest, Katie, is a sophomore at Wm & Mary, and was a valedictorian at her high school. My second daughter, 18, is great with art and animals but has had struggles with depression. She's improved right now. I've worked sometimes, especially in Wisconsin, where we lived for 15 years, but mostly I've done a great deal of volunteer and advocacy work. In Wisconsin, I was on the State Board of the Womens' Clubs group and actually formed a new club in my area. I did many school and volunteer jobs, including Meals on Wheels, taking library books to elderly in 4 cities and was President of the local Newcomers Club for several years. Once Maria was born, I turned a lot of my attention to her care and eventually served on a County disability board, where I became active in the political advocacy movement for disabilities. I wrote a press release on a major issue and did about 10 newspaper interviews and about 5 TV interviews and started speaking at county and state budget meetings, where I became well-known to state politicians. That led to joining many state committees as a parent rep, etc. I also became the local contact person for new parents of babies with Down syndrome and led a large support/ playgroup for them. My husband was a Navy reservist was who mobilized for the war, was gone for about 1 1/2 years, and then decided to give up his law practice upon his return and come back to Virginia to work at the Pentagon. ved in political activities and advocacy. I have easy access to Capitol Hill and have started meeting and speaking with US Senators and getting involved in movements for pro-life, gay rights and disability advocacy. I may also get involved with mental illness groups and have considered writing about the struggles with my daughter. I've done other writing on disability issues including those related to pro-life causes and religious education for children with special needs, and have written articles for a disability newsletter. I also enjoy working on political campaigns. The little ones keep me busy; it's fascinating and fun. I'd love to reconnect with old acquaintances who might be near Fairfax County. I'm no longer the shy skinny-mini that I was in high school! I'm mostly just a very busy mom of four. I enjoy hiking and photography and used to do a lot of needlework. In Oct 2007, we took in some friends who became homeless due to job losses and medical bills - a mom and two kids, one of whom has Down syndrome. They stayed a full three months and have now reunited with husband/daddy and have an aprtment nearby. We're close friends. When I grow up, I want to sleep more. Have a good day! Update 2021: So many years later, and still a busy mom. My kids now range in age from 33 to 16. Maria with Down Syndrome and Autism is still potty-training, is talking more, reading at a 4th grade level, and was given an extra year of school by the governor bec the pandemic took away the chance to visit places where she might go after school. The other 3 are doing great. My middle daughter is finish her PhD in biochemistry at the Medical College of WI. I stay busy with volunteer work for the homeless and with a big project in Haiti. Married 34 years now and planning to retire to the Roanoke area. Will be doing advocacy work on Capitol Hill and the VA State Capitol for disability, homelessness and mental health issues. Enjoy your day!
