Theresa's Story
Life
Currently living in San Francisco (still in Glen Park).
Recently changed careers, leaving television to work for the state getting people back to work. I'm a grandmother now and it is the most excellent adventure. I'm also president of our alumnae association - so please join us! We have yearly luncheons and an active Facebook group!
Workplace
After a variety of jobs after college and before my son was born, I ended up working a temp job stuffing envelopes for 2 weeks at a local tv station. Seven years later I was still there - in the newsroom - working as a field producer and running the news portion of the station's website. In 1997 I was offered a position to be the satellite producer for a not-yet-launched cable TV network. It was the stereotypical internet start-up filled with bright minds and seemingly endless supplies of cash. We were the first to cover some amazing technology stories that today are common place. Remember Y2K, when mainstream media was warning of computer Armageddon? We were the only ones telling folks not to panic. Sadly, as soon as we became profitable, we were sold to Comcast and promptly gutted for our distribution deals (not that I'm bitter or anything). I took almost a year off and returned to TV in 2005. ays and a very exciting place to work. There are days that I miss the excitement of live news - standing in the control room with a phone in each hand, barking out orders to editors - but when I get to leave my sunny little cube at 5pm each day and no one calls me as I'm about to get on a plane to come back to the studio, I get over it. OK, I'll admit, I miss my office with a door that locks. And my interns. And my trips to NYC. But that's it.
My passion these days is - believe it or not - is knitting. I always had an obsession with all things crafty and for the last few years, I've been knitting like a mad women. I learned to knit in 5th grade, from Mrs. Caster at JFK. For years, I ignored it because crocheting was so much quicker (I've never been patient). But a few years ago, I discovered some knitting blogs online and got hooked again. Hooked to the point where I now have Etsy & eBay stores to sell my knitting. Mostly I make hats and purses. My absolute dream would be to open up a little coffee house/craft store in the city - in Bernal Heights - a nice, warm, comfortable spot with a fireplace, big leather couches, and maybe a small patio/garden area for summer. We'd have a barista and a lunch counter with a small selection of sandwich/salads and maybe a wine bar at night. And walls filled with yarn - I even know what brands I'd carry. In the meantime, I'll keep buying lotto tickets.
