Thomas's Story

I'm a geography professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and I am married to my wonderful husband Charlie. I'm a classic tale of the ugly duckling to swan...I was pretty miserable in high school, depressed with low self esteem, struggling to come out of closet during a time and in a place where that was not possible. So at my first opportunity to get out of Dodge I was gone. What a ride it has been since 1977: - Summers in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park, winters in Denver... - East Lansing to get my degree at MSU... - University of Toledo for graduate school... - 10 years in Boston, ...Expand for more
first as an urban planner then as a corporate drone in a Brooks Brothers suit... - Providence, RI for a few years until my house burned to the ground and I became an alcoholic.... - Sobered up in Southwest Florida, then FSU in Tallahassee for a PhD..... - 2 years in the heat and peanut fields of South Georgia, my first academic job at Georgia Southern University... - Landed in Norfolk...got married, got tenure, got tired, got old... I went back to Grand Rapids about 10 years ago, and was SHOCKED at all the changes...the old high school was long gone and Cascade was unrecognizable.
