Thomas's Story

Since the job market has taken a turn for the worse, I decided to go for it by starting my art/writing career a few years ago. Fortunately, I got the house paid off first before I took the plunge. No point taking any chances. A lot has gone on in my life over the years. Made some decisions that didn't always work out. Live and learn. I'm still playing my guitar, though not as much as I used to. So, I'm a graduate of Benson high School of 1975. I can't believe the ugly hair style and clothes I wore back then! Must - purge - from memory! A lot of you probably had my dad, Mr Thomas Herring as your your teacher in Fluid Power. He's since retired but staying busy. Two years after high school, I end up working for the school district. And there they were, my former teachers, walking in the building, haunting me and laughing. *shiver* My 17 years at PPS as a printer ended in the 1994 with the help of budget cuts, (measure 5 anyone?) but in the end, it pushed me to try something new. So off I go to start a new career in multimedia. Jump ahead 15 years. Still struggling to make a career out of it, then: I had a health scare a few years ago and that made me think about my future. My priorities got off quilter for a while. My spiritual belief took a beating and it took a lot of fighting and praying to get back home. Going back to the Kingdom Hall has been a blessing and getting reacquainted with old friends is strengthening. Now I'm playing catch up and trying to be regular in meeting attendance and reading my magazines. What shocked me is seeing all those kids now grown up, married and with families. I hate looking in the mirror. *sigh* So, for my freelance work, I've written screenplays and have entered various competitions. I've come in second, third place and top ten ...Expand for more
finals with comedy short scripts and teleplays. It's not easy and it's hard work but I wouldn't change it for a 8-5 job! I also do artwork and sell them when I can. Not easy in a down market but I make do. I pitched a sci-fi logline to a manager this August and now I have to rewrite it before sending it off to him. I've kicked the Hollywood wall so much, I think I broke my foot. So people, and you know who you are, get in touch with me and let me know how things are going with you. We can look each other in the face and tell each other how we haven't changed a bit! Riiight. Time to get the gray out and work on that flab. I always wanted to be a rockstar when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I still wanna be a rockstar. I've been one of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1981. It's been an up and down experience but I've made my way back and am continuing on. Also I took a part time job driving for First Student. Seems like I went full circle and ended up in the school system again. Oh well. It's not so bad. The wildest thing I ever did in high school? I survived it. I've lived in Holland, Redwood City, California, Lock Bourne Air Force Base in Ohio, and Portland, Oregon. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel everything and add on a studio and a three car garage. My dream home would be self contained. I hate cleaning but someone has to do it. You get one do-over. What do you do differently? Go with my first choice and listen to the warning signs. Fortunately, I never married so that saved me a lot of headaches. My first job was at a stereo warehouse, where I got paid less than $2.00 an hour to mop floors and clean bathrooms. What I remember most about it is I got fired by a guy named Gilligan.
