Thomas's Story
Life
I presently work for NYS State Ed in the
teacher certification office. I certifiy all school
staff, talk to them on the phone, email them
and write them letters. When I solve a
problem and get someone certified they tell
me they love me and want to marry me
(generally only if female) or that I am nogood
scum, typical beauraucrat and they will write to
my boss and call their assemblyman. I love
the work. I feel like I make a difference in
people's lives. I --take minutes at staff
meetings so remember almost everything that
is said--thus am consulted too much and
rarely get any of my own work done. And I like
to try to improve the workflow process. I am
only a (relatively) low level peon, but I make
my bosses laugh, they like me and listen to
me (sometimes) so I get some of my ideas
implemented. But change is painfully slow.
So...Expand for more
me of things done in government offices
are absolutely absurd.
I go for a long walk at lunch, though a lovely
park (here in Albany )(designed by the same
guy that designed Central Park in NYC).
I go home at night to my family (wife and 3
children ages 2,4,9---girl, girl,boy). Cook
dinner 3 nights, clean up, read to the children
and usually fall asleep reading. I am an old
dad-but I wouldnt have it any different.
Before this, I taught Earth Science and
Physics for short while in a small school in
the Adirondaks (after getting a master's in ed
and state certified). I spent a few years
between my job as a volcanic geologist and
geohydrologist with USGS and teaching,
driving taxi, delivering newspapers and pizza,
working as an electricians assistant and ran a
cafe in Albany, holding poetry readings every
Sunday for 3 years. Thats. ME.
