Thomas's Story

In the last couple of months, I have had many visits to my CM site. . I can also guess that there is a curosity of who this guyTom Holmes is. To most of my fellow classmates, I was rather obscure The reason is that I worked at Santas Village near Lake Arrowhead every weekend, holidays and summer vacation. That mean I was never at school activities except for football games because of band. Thinking back, I only attended one dance. To complicate this even turther, I went to PHS for my Sophomore and half of my junior year. My parents moved from the east side of SB to Rialto which mean a school change. I thank my cousin Pat Smith for helping me acclimate to SBHS. After graduating from SBHS, I went to Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. There I was in the band and Sigma Nu fraternity. It was a great experience to gain self confidence, learn to chase girls, and drink beer. Unfortunately it was not a great education experience (my fault) and I left in the middle of my sophomore year. Actually I dropped out before they threw me out. Went into the USAF in Sept 1961. After basic at San Antonio, I was sent to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS for Electronics Training. Towards the end of this training, I was selected to be an instructor and was retained at Keesler for what I thought was going to be the rest of my four year enlistment. I did stay there until 1964, but due to Viet Nam, I was sent to an isolated site in Alaska for my last year. After leaving the USAF, I became an engineer at a company in Riverside. During the course of that employment, I sent into sales and was eventually transferred to Orlando, FL as a Sales Engineer. When the electronics industry fell apart in the early 70's we moved to Ft. Walton Beach, FL. During my tenure in FL, I became involved with the Dale Carnegie program where I became and instructor (13 years.) It was in one of my classes that I met the CEO of the Eglin Federal Credit Union in Ft. Walton Beach who offered me a job as their VP and director of Marketing. That led to a position 7 years later in Pensacola with Mutual Federal Savings & Loan (The oldest S&L in the state) as again, VP Director of Marketing. While in Ft. Walton Beach I joined the Shrine. That was 38 years ago. After moving to Woodland Park, CO I became the Potentate for Al Kaly Shrine for all of S...Expand for more
outhern Colorado (Potentate is our word for President) In 1978, i went to Los Angeles to see my father become a Shriner. I was flying back home from California on National Flight 193 (May 8th, 1978) when the pilot misread the altimeter and drove us into the Bay of Escambia (Pensacola). Three were killed and the rest of us were hurt with various injuries. The next morning I made the decision to finish my undergrad education and because I had some credit from AZ state and a few classes along the way I was admitted into the University of West Florida. It was my intention to just do a BS, but got hooked on education and went directly into an MBA. Finished that and became an adjunct professor. I Still teach at the University of Colorado. We live in Colorado. Have 4 children and still work (yes still) as an Investment Advisor in Woodland Park, CO, while serving clients around the US and in some foreign countries. Am a very active Free Mason and Shriner. Before I served as Potentate, I started, and still play the Bag Pipes in the Shrine marching band. I guess this is a reclimation of my SBHS band experience. Started Scuba diving when I was 19 and living in Lake Arrowhead. At age 20 I became a part of the SB Sheriffs Underwater Rescue unit. Did the same thing when in the AF and again when I left the military. I rejoined the Sheriffs underwater unit whereby I eventually became the commander. During this tenure, I decided that I really didn't want to do this anymore (recovering bodies) and gave up diving. When my sons became of age to wanted to learn, I went back and am now a Master Diver. Some think at age 74, I should give it up. My answer, No Way! In fact I am going to Cozumel, Mexico in February. Due to my PADI experience with CPR/AED, I elected to get my instructor certification with The American Heart Association. My daughter (age 42 and I now teach CPR as a hobby. What thrill to be back in the classroom and giving people a skill that we think is very necessary today. It is also a real pleasure to work with my daughter. I have noticed that there are a number of fellow class-mates who were also not great students but have gone on to be successful as adults. Maybe there is hope for our children and grandchildren. Would love to hear from my fellow class-mates. Tom Holmes Life is good.
