Thomas Lansing:

CLASS OF 1976
Satellite beach, FL

Thomas's Story

After I left Satellite H.S., I graduated from Florida State with a Management of Information Systems Degree and minored in Military Science (ROTC). Florida State was fabulous ... was a student senator and ran the homecoming parade twice ... and enjoyed running across a few Satellite classmates on campus from time to time. I then moved on to my first career move in the military. I was trained as an Army field artillery officer, but with my MIS degree, they had me running a secure data center basically running war games and simulations. Military service wasn't what I expected (I was old school) so I then tried my second career move working as a NASA contractor with Allied-Signal Aerospace running a large data center that supported all the next generation communications with the space shuttle, space telescope, etc. Things really slowed down after the Challenger space shuttle disaster so I left the space biz industry. I then spent 15 years with MCI Telecommunications delivering interexchange carrier voice and data solutions. Some of the more interesting work was in fraud prevention where sometimes we were helping the various law enforcement agencies track terrorists and criminals. I also delivered interactive voice response systems which probably everyone that reads this will have placed calls through these systems at one time or another. I left MCI before WorldCom went bankrupt. It was very sad to see such a successful company brought down by a bunch of common criminals. I married my wife Linda in 1992 and we have been very happy. No children, but two very spoiled cats. Linda works at EDS (H. Ross Perot's original company). She works in corporate communications so I get some really great perks. I get to...Expand for more
go to the EDS Byron Classic a lot, several corporate events (I got to see Chicago a couple of years ago and yes, they're still fantastic!), and I get all kinds of cool logo clothes and other free stuff! Linda likes to spend her spare time making jewelry and she's very good at it! We lead a fairly active life traveling, taking a cruise or two every year, and playing golf (me more than her). When I'm not working, I enjoy working around the house. You'll find me at Lowes every weekend looking for a little project to do around the house. In more recent years, I've held contract/consulting positions in the IT and voice and data infrastructure positions. I managed the installation of Wachovia's entire Voice over IP infrastructure based on Cisco's CallManager, Unity and MeetingPlace products. The past couple of years I've managed the implementation of Cisco's Unified Communicaitons solutions for IBM, Regus, Aramark and other national customers. Currently, I'm trying to find the right balance of work, time with my wife, staying fit and playing golf. I can't say I've mastered any of these endeavors, but I'm certainly persistent. I currently live in a suburb Northeast of Dallas in the city of Allen. I've never been a big fan of the Dallas area, but the income is good and it's a decent quality of life. My wife and I are already looking for retirement homes in Brevard county as we hope to retire early and pursue a final more low tech career until we just don't feel like working any more. I hope all my old friends are happy and doing well. I have enjoyed all our reunions and plan to make every one I possibly can. If you've never been to one, make the time. They're literally a blast from the past! Cheers!
