Thomas's Story

Since the 1995 reunion I have moved twice and retired twice. ASARCO moved me to Tacoma, WA in 2000 to manage the remediation of a former smelter site, Then, without notice, they gave me the golden handshake retirement in November 2002 due to the company’s financial situation (they filed for bankruptcy 3 years later). I wasn't ready to retire and didn't want to work in non-ferrous metal industry anymore. I took the opportunity to explore other careers. I talked to a lot of folks about different careers. Ironically, about two weeks after I retired, the local public utility put an ad in the paper for someone to manage the implementation of the renewed Federal license of their largest hydroelectric project. While I had no electric utility experience, I did have considerable experience in dealing with state and federal regulatory agencies and with the public, so I applied and got the job. They knew the bulk of the work would be in the first 8 or 10 years which would fit with me retiring again at 65. It was a great 8½ years with a great boss (my first female boss) and co-workers- all of whom were fish or wildlife biologists. I was able to mold the position as I saw fit and was pretty much left alone to do it. This got me involved with salmon recovery as we had three endangered species, fish hatcheries, wildlife management, park design and expansions, and cultural resources- all completely new to me. The job also provided us many trips to Washington D.C. for the annual National Hydropower Assn. meeting which occurred at cherry blossom time every year. In planning for retirement, we decided to retire in the Texas Hill Country. Both of our children and families lived in Dallas, but that was not for us. To that end, we bought some property outside of Marble Falls, Texas (near Austin) in 2007. In a fortuitous move, Beverly and I decided to not wait until we retired to travel to Europe. I had been to Germany on business, but Beverly had not been to Europe. We managed to take in Ireland, England, Spain, France, Switzerland and northern Italy before Beverly was diagnosed with ov...Expand for more
arian cancer in July 2008. This was a game changer. After a major surgery, chemotherapy she managed to go into remission twice and was in remission when we retired in August, 2011. Fortunately, I had excellent insurance with the utility and she was afforded top notch care. We decided that given the chance of cancer coming back and the fact that you could buy existing homes cheaper that you can build them at that time, we decided to buy an existing home in Marble Falls and sell our property - another fortuitous decision. Only about two months into retirement, the cancer came back. Throughout all this she was able to complete the family genealogy for both of our families with over 5000 people included. I’m very proud of that accomplishment. She fought the cancer bravely with radiation and chemotherapy until she passed away in March of 2015. Not the retirement I had hoped for us. I am doing okay staying busy with trips to Dallas to see the kids and enjoy my now 10 year-old granddaughter. It doesn't look like my daughter and son-in-law are going to have children- just dogs. Not surprising since she didn't married until she was 38. Also keeping me busy is yard work, target shooting, being on my city's Planning and Zoning Commission (since July 2017),. In January 2019 I was appointed to my county's Central Appraisal District's Appraisal Review Board that hears protests of property appraisal values. We meet about 35 days over the summer to hear the protests. I now have a serious girlfriend that I've been seeing for a year and a half- Sharon. She joined me on my trip to Denver in October of 2019 to attend my 50th reunion at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. We had a great time and I was amazed a the changes in the campus since I graduated. Update: Sharon has now moved in with me. It's nice to have someone to share my life and house with. This includes her two miniature dachshunds that she inherited from her late son. They can be entertaining one minute and aggravating the next. They are 15 and 16, so not sure how long they will be with us. Updated February 2020.
