Thomas's Story

I'm a writer, photographer, and on my third tour of duty as a contract automotive test driver, attempting to live the lifestyle of traveler, explorer, and voyager these days. I'm also a dual citizen with a pair of passports, which allows me a little additional freedom to search globally for the next perfect destination.
Following an undistinguished performance at Lowrey, I tried a bit of college at Michigan Tech beginning in the fall of 1967. Lacking the interest, drive or dedication required to succeed however, it only took an academic year for them to bounce me out for some real world experience.
My real world working experience began with Michigan Bell Telephone in 1968, where I was maintaining switching equipment in the Livonia Central Office. Really though, if you lived in Garden City or Livonia during 1968 or 1969 and had trouble with your phone, I swear it wasn't my fault. This was the only job I've ever really subsequently regretted leaving.
Real world experiences were interrupted by the surreal, when I was drafted into the Army in the fall of 1969. Eventually trained in missile guidance systems, I served out my obligation to country in as short a time as possible at far-away and exotic places named Kentucky, Alabama, and Missouri. I parted company with the military in 1971 and I'm sure all parties were equally happy when that job and association ended.
Returning to "blue collar" factory jobs, I worked with Unistrut, Ford, and General Motors between 1969 and 1981.
I managed to eventually graduate from Washtenaw Community College (with honors, no less!) in both 1973 and 1974 and have taken the occasional class since, but never bothered to finish up anything more than the two Associate's Degrees.
I went "white collar" as the Service Manager at an Apple and IBM computer retailer in the 1980's. Following up on the computer service experience I worked as a computer network administrator with the University of Michigan for more than 15 years, until my position was eliminated during a university-wide downsizing in 2003.
I earn my walking around money as a contract test driver for Hyundai's North American Technical Center in Ann Arbor. This is a great job for someone like me who loves to drive, as cover up to 430 miles per shift on Michigan's highways in engineering test and prototype vehicles. It's fun driving disguised prototypes of nex...Expand for more
t year's models or beyond, as it provides me with opportunities to lie to people, when they ask what the car is.
I've finally started putting onto paper all those fiction ideas I've been carrying around in my head for years. Which project will be finished first, the novel or the pilot script for a television show? Even I'm not sure ...
I'm a former International Hot Rod Association national class record holder (AA/MS in 1975) and navigated the SAAB/Fortune Magazine team to a third-in-class finish in the seven day, 7,200 mile 1988 One Lap of America rallye.
Moonlighting as a writer and photographer with the GM Goodwrench NASCAR Winston Cup team in 1991, I was able to travel to events from Charlotte to Phoenix "on the circuit" with seven time champion, Dale Earnhardt, team owner Richard Childress, and crew chief Kirk Shelmerdine. Frankly though, my interest in NASCAR ended for the most part on a sad February day a few seasons ago, when I lost a friend in a bad accident during the last lap of the Daytona 500. I do still carry an occasional interest in Formula One, IndyCar, and drag racing however, and I'm able to follow the ALMS (American LeMans Series) Corvette team pretty close because one of the support guys on the team is a friend.
I still cherish all the good times my wife Cathy (Warner - LHS Class of 1969) and I had during our 32 years of marriage, before ovarian cancer claimed her in 2005. Dispite all the adventures we had, in the end of course it was still way too few.
I've allowed my mid-life crisis to progress to the point where during the warmer months my favorite daily driver is either a 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette coupe, in "Carbon Flash" black metalflake paint or a 2008 Corvette Indy Pace Car replica convertible with full graphics package. These are my third and fourth sixth-generation Corvettes, and as grand-touring automobiles I don't think they can be beat..
Married to Madeline in the fall of 2009, I've begun a second and hopefully equally full lap on life, attempting to concentrate mostly on things that are enjoyable and fun. Where did I leave those Route 66 maps, and what's out there waiting for me along the historic Lincoln Highway?
If you spend time on the water, please take a safe boating course and always wear your PFD. Also please drive safely - you might not believe some of the stupid moves I've seen out on our roads as I roll 40,000 miles per year onto test vehicles. Finally, when you fly, don't let your arms get too tired.
Do good and be well.
