Life
Seven days after graduation(6/3/63) Mike Graban called from Camp Soles. They needed a camp counselor because someone got a real bad dose of poison ivy and had to go home. At the end of the summer I took a position with Cox's, in their warehouse. I was there when JFK was assasinated. I was making $1.00 an hour. Left there to go to Murphys warehouse for 11 cents more an hour. They laid me off after two weeks. I then moved to the Detroit,MI area to live with my Aunt and Uncle who went up with Kelsey Hays. I ended up working for an A&P for about six months as a night stock boy at $2.10 an hour. When I got back in June of '64 and went to Atlantic City with Timmy Farrell and Jerry Livingston. Timmy and I contiued on to New York for the World's Fair for a week. Got back in time to get a job at National Tube. My number came up in the Draft but they didn't want me. a calling to talk me into coming out which I did in August of 65. We all went to Los Angeles Harbor J.C. I went to, and graduated from California State University at Long Beach (1971). Came back home kicked around for a couple months then got a job at the Veterans Hospital in Coatesville, PA. Six years later I resigned to travel. Ended up back in McKeesport eventually took a job with Mon Yough MH/MR running their adult training program for people with mental retardation. That led to a Masters Degree in Education from Pitt. Which, as it turns out, eventually led to a position with Goodwill Industries in Lancaster PA., doing similiar work but for more pay. I left Goodwill in 99. After more kicking around I took a position as the Executive Director of Ephrata Area Social Services. We are a food, clothing, furniture Bank with Meals on Wheels and a Transportatiion Service.
