Thomas's Story

I have been retired since 2010 from Bridgewater State University where I taught for 39 years in the history department. I had continued to teach one course fall and spring since retiring but I decided that 48 years was enough and the spring semester 2019 was my last at Bridgewater. Since retiring I have still been active; I was the vice-chair of the Massachusetts Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission 2011-2015. I have also edited the Lincoln Herald, the oldest journal in the US devoted to the study of our 16th president for 33 years. In January I will be retiring from that position, the longest serving editor in the Herald’s history. We have a Retired Faculty Club at Bridgewater and we meet 6 times a year for lunch and a program.. I am a member of the Executive Committee. I'm also a retired army colonel, 28 months active duty, and 28 years in the reserves. I go to Newport to the pharmacy and commissary. I belong to an online group of Korean veterans who served on the island of Kangwha-do. Enjoyed attending a reunion several years ago...Expand for more
. Lois and I were married for 48 years and have three daughters Amy, Melissa, and Jennifer. Melissa was the chief mate on the training ship at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. (The first female chief mate in MMA's history). In September she joined the teaching staff. Jennifer has followed in my footsteps and has been a Visiting Lecturer in history at Bridgewater State, Nichols College, Emmanuel College, and Springfield College. She has just accepted a position as Executive Director of the Robbins House, an African-American Museum in Concord. I also have a 9 year old granddaughter Margaret and retiring from teaching allows me to spend more time with her. My daughter Jen gave birth on March 5, 2021, to a grandson whom they named after me. Time flies and in March Tommy will be three years old. Unfortunately Lois died on December 30, 2017. She had been on dialysis for 7 years but generally doing okay. Her passing was quick and unexpected. Fortunately our kids and grandkids all live close. We had been married for 48 years but life goes on.
